L T\/P\/D C<br \/>\nCourse Code: HS106 3 0\/0\/0 3<\/p>\n<p><strong>INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In view of the growing importance of English as a tool for global communication and the\u00a0consequent emphasis on training students to acquire language skills, the syllabus of English has\u00a0been designed to develop linguistic and communicative competencies of Engineering students.\u00a0In English classes, the focus should be on the skills development in the areas of vocabulary,\u00a0grammar, reading and writing. For this, the teachers should use the prescribed text book for\u00a0detailed study. The students should be encouraged to read the texts\/poems silently leading to\u00a0reading comprehension. Reading comprehension passages are given for practice in the class. The\u00a0time should be utilized for working out the exercises given after each excerpt, and also for\u00a0supplementing the exercises with authentic materials of a similar kind, for example, from\u00a0newspaper articles, advertisements, promotional material, etc. The focus in this syllabus is on\u00a0skill development, fostering ideas and practice of language skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:\u00a0<\/strong>The course will help students to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve the language proficiency of students in English with an emphasis on\u00a0Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading and Writing skills.<\/li>\n<li>Equip students to study academic subjects more effectively using the theoretical and\u00a0Practical components of English syllabus.<\/li>\n<li>Develop study skills and communication skills in formal and informal situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:\u00a0<\/strong>Students will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use English Language effectively in spoken and written forms.<\/li>\n<li>Comprehend the given texts and respond appropriately.<\/li>\n<li>Communicate confidently in formal and informal contexts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>SYLLABUS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading Skills:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To develop an awareness in students about the significance of silent reading and\u00a0comprehension.<\/p>\n<p>To develop students\u2019 ability to guess meanings of words from the context and grasp the\u00a0overall message of the text, draw inferences, etc., by way of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Skimming and Scanning the text<\/li>\n<li>Intensive and Extensive Reading<\/li>\n<li>Reading for Pleasure<\/li>\n<li>Identifying the topic sentence<\/li>\n<li>Inferring lexical and contextual meaning<\/li>\n<li>Recognizing Coherence\/Sequencing of Sentences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: The students will be trained in reading skills using the prescribed texts for detailed\u00a0study.
