I Year I Sem. L T\/P\/D C<br \/>\nCourse Code: BS105 4 1\/0\/0 4<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The organic compounds are classified based on their functional groups and\u00a0character. The basic principles and mechanisms of different types of organic reactions are\u00a0explained in an elaborative manner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Outcome: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The detailed study on the mechanisms involved in various reactions would\u00a0help the students to understand the synthesis of higher organic compounds which would be dealt\u00a0in future classes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT I<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Structure and Activity of Organic Molecules:<\/strong> Shapes of organic molecules, bond lengths,\u00a0bond angles and bond dissociation energies. Electronic effects in organic molecules: inductive\u00a0effect, electromeric or mesomeric effect, hyperconjugation, concept of resonance; types of\u00a0organic reagents and reactions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aliphatic\/Alicyclic Hydrocarbons:<\/strong> Nomenclature, isomerism (chain, conformational and\u00a0geometrical) relative stabilities (heats of combustion and hydrogenation), ring stabilities of\u00a0cyclohexane, chair-boat conformation, Bayer\u2019s strain theory and sachse-mohr theory. Free\u00a0radical substitution reactions (halogenation) of alkanes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT II<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alkenes<\/strong>: Electrophilic addition reactions of alkenes, Markovnikov\u2019s rule, Kharasch effect,\u00a0Bayer\u2019s oxidation (cis-hydroxylation, polymerisation).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alkadienes:<\/strong> Stability and 1,4 addition reactions of conjugated alkadienes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alkynes:<\/strong> Acidity of 1-alkynes, formation of metal acetylides. Stereo specific reduction of\u00a0alkynes.
