L T\/P\/D C<br \/>\nCourse Code: CH102BS\/CH202BS 4 0\/0\/0 4<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To bring adaptability to new developments in Engineering Chemistry and to acquire the skills required to become a perfect engineer.<\/li>\n<li>To include the importance of water in industrial usage, significance of corrosion control to protect the structures, polymers and their controlled usage.<\/li>\n<li>To acquire knowledge of engineering materials and about fuels and batteries.<\/li>\n<li>To acquire required knowledge about engineering materials like cement, refractories and composites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students will gain the basic knowledge of electrochemical procedures related to corrosion and its control. They can understand the basic properties of water and its usage in domestic and industrial purposes. They learn the use of fundamental principles to make predictions about the general properties of materials. They can predict potential applications of chemistry and practical utility in order to become good engineers and entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-I<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Water and its treatment:<\/strong> Introduction \u2013 hardness of water \u2013 causes of hardness \u2013 types of hardness: temporary and permanent \u2013 expression and units of hardness \u2013 Estimation of hardness of water by complexometric method. Numerical problems. Potable water and its specifications- Steps involved in the treatment of potable water &#8211; Disinfection of potable water by chlorination and Ozonization. Defluoridation \u2013 Nalgonda technique &#8211; Determination of F- ion by ion- selective electrode method.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boiler troubles:\u00a0<\/strong>Sludges, scales and Caustic embrittlement. Internal treatment of Boiler feed water \u2013 Calgon conditioning \u2013 Phosphate conditioning &#8211; Colloidal conditioning \u2013 Softening of water by ion- exchange processes. Desalination of water \u2013 Reverse osmosis. Numerical problems \u2013 Sewage water &#8211; Steps involved in treatment of sewage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT-II<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Electrochemistry and Batteries:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Electrochemistry:<\/strong> Electrode- electrode potential, standard electrode potential, types of\u00a0electrodes \u2013 Construction and functioning of Standard hydrogen electrode, calomel and glass electrode. Nernst equation &#8211; electrochemical series and its applications.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Electrochemical cells<\/strong>: Daniel cell \u2013 cell notation, cell reaction and cell emf -\u2013 Concept of concentration cells \u2013 Electrolyte concentration cell \u2013Numerical problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Batteries:<\/strong> Cell and battery &#8211; Primary battery (dry cell, alkaline cell and Lithium cell) and Secondary battery (lead acid, Ni-Cd and lithium ion cell),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fuel cells<\/strong>: Hydrogen \u2013oxygen and methanol-oxygen fuel cells \u2013 Applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT-III<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Polymers:<\/strong> Definition \u2013 Classification of polymers with examples \u2013 Types of polymerization \u2013 addition (free radical addition) and condensation polymerization with examples.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plastics:<\/strong> Definition and characteristics- thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics, compounding and fabrication of plastics (compression and injection moulding).
