At this stage, the students need to prepare\u00a0themselves for their careers which may require them to listen to, read, speak and write in English both for their professional and interpersonal communication in the globalised context.The proposed course should be a laboratory course to enable students to use &#8216;good&#8217; English and perform the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gathering ideas and information to organise ideas relevantly and coherently.<\/li>\n<li>Engaging in debates.<\/li>\n<li>Participating in_group discussions. Facing interviews.<\/li>\n<li>Writing project\/research reports\/technical reports. Making oral presentations.<\/li>\n<li>Writing formal letters.<\/li>\n<li>Transferring information from non-verbal to verbal texts and vice-<span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">versa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Taking part in social and professional communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Objective\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Lab focuses on using multi-media instruction for language development to meet the following targets:<\/p>\n<p>To improve the students&#8217; fluency in English, through a well-developed vocabulary and enable them to listen to English spoken at normal conversational speed by educated English speakers and respond appropriately in different socio-cultural and professional contexts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Further, they would be required to communicate their ideas relevantly\u00a0and coherently in writing.<\/li>\n<li>To prepare all the students for their placements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Syllabus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following course content to conduct the activities is prescribed for the Advanced Communication Skills (ACS) Lab<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activities on Fundamentals of Inter-personal communication and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Building Vocabulary <\/strong><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>Starting a conversation &#8211; responding appropriately and relevantly &#8211; using the right body language role<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>Play in different situations &amp; Discourse Skills using visuals-Synonyms and antonyms, word roots, one-word substitutes, prefixes<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>and suffixes, study of word origin, business\u00a0vocabulary, analogy<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>idioms and phrases, collocations &amp; usage of vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activities on Reading Comprehension<\/strong><strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>-General Vs Local\u00a0comprehension, reading for facts, guessing meanings from context, scanning, skimming. inferring meaning, critical reading &amp; effective googling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Activities on Writing Skills &#8211; <\/strong>Structure and presentation of different\u00a0types of writing &#8211; <em>letter writing\/Resume writing\/ e-corresponden<\/em><em><sup>ce\/ <\/sup><\/em>lanning for writing &#8211;<em>Technical report writing\/ Portfolio writing &#8211; <\/em>p improving one&#8217;s writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activities on Presentation Skills &#8211; <\/strong>Oral presentations<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>(individualand group) through JAM sessions\/seminars\/pPTs\u00a0and written presentations through posters\/projects\/reports\u00a0\/ e-mails\/assignments<br \/>\netc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activities on Group Discussion and Interview skills dynamics-\u00a0<\/strong>of group discussion, intervention, summarising,\u00a0modulation of voice<sup>, <\/sup>body language, relevance, fluency and organization of ideas and rubrics for evaluation- Concept and process&#8221;\u00a0 pre-interview planning<sup>, <\/sup>opening strategies, answering strategies, interview through tele-conference &amp; video-conference and mock Interviews.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minimum Requirement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Advanced Communication Skills\u00a0(ACS) Laboratory shall have the\u00a0following infra-structural facilities to accommodate\u00a0at least<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>35 students in the lab.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spacious room with appropriate acoustics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Round Tables with movable chairs Audio-visual aids<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LCD Projector<\/li>\n<li>Public Address system<\/li>\n<li>P &#8211; IV Processor, Hard Disk &#8211; 80 GB, RAM-512 MB Minimum,Speed &#8211; 2.8 GHZ<\/li>\n<li>T. Of the 25 marks. 15 marks shall be awarded for\u00a0day-to-day work and 10 marks to be awarded by conducting Internal\u00a0Lab Test(s). The End Examination shall be conducted by the teacher concerned, by inviting the External Examiner from outside.
