The course also critically focuses on the crystallography, phase\u00a0transformations that occur in several ferrous and nonferrous metallurgical systems as a function of temperature\u00a0and composition through phase equilibrium diagrams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 I<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Crystal structure\u00a0 <\/strong>Crystallography: space lattice, unit cell, lattice parameter, coordination number, atomic radius, packing factor, density calculations. Miller\u2019s indices. Relation between crystal structure and ductility. Solidification: \u00a0homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation. Polymorphism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Microstructures <\/strong>\u00a0Grains and grain boundaries. ASTM Grain Size. Grain size dependence of strength. Strain \u00a0hardening, Recrystallization, and grain growth. Solid solutions &#8211; substitutional and interstitial solid solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 III<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Binary Phase diagrams\u00a0 Construction. Isomorphous and eutectic systems-Specific examples: Cu-Ni, Pb-Sn, AlCu. \u00a0Structure evolution. Phase rule. Lever rule. Hume-Rothery rules. Importance of electron-to-atom ratio. Intermediate phases, Inter metallic compounds. Application of phase diagrams.
