Course Objective:
This course is intended to provide in depth knowledge on processing ceramic materials including structure, properties, phase transformations, applications, and fabrication methods of ceramics.

Unit – I
Introduction and Crystal structures: Definition, Classification of Ceramics, Traditional Ceramics, Structural Ceramics, Ceramic super conductors. Crystal structures in Ceramics, Grouping of ions and Pouling�s rules, Oxide structures, Silicate structures, Glass formation, Models of glass structure Types of glasses.
Unit – II
Equilibrium Diagrams of ceramic systems: Two component systems like AI2O3 – SiO2 and BaO – TiO2; and Three component systems MgO – ALO3 – SiO2

Powder Preparation Techniques: Sol-gel technology – Precipitation, Coprecipitation and Hydrothermal precipitation techniques. Preparation of Al2O3, ZrO2, SiC, Si3N4 BN and B4C.

Ceramic Processing Techniques: Hot Pressing, Hot Isostatic Pressing, (HIP). Spark Plasma Sintering. Sintering, Sinter / HIP, Injection moulding, Slip casting, Tape casting, Gel casting, Extrusion.
