Advanced Pharmacognosy- I Detailed Syllabus for Pharmacognosy M.Pharm first year first sem is covered here. This gives the details about credits, number of hours and other details along with reference books for the course.

The detailed syllabus for Advanced Pharmacognosy- I M.Pharm 2017-2018 (R17) first year first sem is as follows.

M.Pharm. I Year I Sem.

Course Objective: To provide an opportunity for the students to understand the cultivation and utilization aspects of drugs falling under this chapter. Helps the students to get exposed to various techniques of plant tissue culture and explore marine origin natural products

Course Outcome: the students will gain applicable knowledge about the traditional/ ethno medicinal plants which helps them to work upon them for proving their use scientifically.

UNIT – I : Plant drug cultivation: General introduction to the importance of Pharmacognosy in herbal drug industry, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Current Good Agricultural Practices, Current Good Cultivation Practices, Conservation of medicinal plants- Ex-situ and Insituconservation of medicinal plants. Post harvesting techniques and utilization of the following Medicinal and Aromatic plants: Ashwagandha, Saffron, Safed musli, Davana, Pachouli and Lemon grass A brief account on Chemical and Pharmacological aspects and uses of the following medicinal plants

UNIT – II

  • Immunomodulators
  1. Asparagus racemosa
  2. Withaniasomnifera
  • Antioxidants
  1. Gingko biloba
  2. Artemesiaannua
  • Antidiabetics
  1. Gymnemasylvestera
  2. Momordicacharantia

UNIT – III

  • Hepatoprotectives
  1. Phyllanthusamarus
  2. Silybummarianum
  • Cardioprotectives
  1. Coleus forskolin
  2. Allium sativum
  • Insecticides and Insect repellants
  1. Azadirachtaindica
  2. Chrysanthemum cinerarifolium

UNIT – IV : Nutraceuticals: Current trends and future scope, Inorganic mineral supplements, Vitamin supplements, Digestive enzymes, Dietary fibres, Cereals and grains, Health drinks of natural origin, Antioxidants, Polyunsaturated fatty acids, Herbs as functional foods, Formulation and standardization of neutraceuticals, Regulatory aspects, FSSAI guidelines, Sources, name of marker compounds and their chemical nature, medicinal uses and health benefits of following
i) Spirulina ii) Soya bean iii) Ginseng iv) Garlic v) Broccoli vi) Green and Herbal Tea vii) Flax seeds viii) Black cohosh ix) Turmeric.

UNIT – V : Phytopharmaceuticals: Occurrence, isolation and characteristic features (Chemical nature, uses in
pharmacy, medicinal and health benefits) of following.

  1. Carotenoids – i) α and β – Carotene ii) Xanthophyll (Lutein)
  2. Limonoids – i) d-Limonene ii) α – Terpineol
  3. Saponins – i) Shatavarins
  4. Flavonoids – i) Resveratrol ii) Rutin iii) Hesperidin iv)Naringin v) Quercetin
  5. Phenolic acids- Ellagic acid
  6. Tocotrienols and Tocopherols
  7. Andrographolide, Glycolipids, Gugulipids, Withanolides,Vascine, Taxol
