Course Objective

  • To provide basic knowledge in transduction principles, sensors, transducer technology and measurement systems.

UNIT-I

Introduction to measurement systems: general concepts and terminology, measurement systems, sensor classification, general input-output configuration, methods of correction static characteristics of measurement systems- accuracy, linearity, resolution, precision and sensitivity etc. estimation of errors. Standards: Definition of standard units International standards Primary standards Secondary standards Working standards Voltage standard Resistance standard Current standard Capacitance standard Time and frequency standards.

UNIT-II

Dynamic characteristics: Transfer function, dynamic characteristics of measurement systems: zero-order, first order, second-order measurement systems and response

UNIT-III

Temperature : Thermal expansion methods, Thermo electric, electrical resistance and semiconductor sensors. Radiation
methods- thermal and photon detectors based thermometers .

Pressure : Methods of pressure measurement: Dead weight gauges and manometers, elastic transducers, vibrating cylinder
and other resonant transducers. Testing of pressure measuring system. High pressure measurement.
