Course Outcomes:

On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to attain below Course outcomes

  1. CO1 : Analyse the impurities in water, select raw materials, Discuss the methods of water treatment proceses. manufacturing processes and sketch the flow sheets of various industrial chemicals
  2. CO2 : Identify the raw materials, chemical reactions, sketch the flow sheets and explain the manufacturing processes of various industrial acids.
  3. CO3 : Recall the properties & applications of different types of glass & cement, identify the constituents of paints and illustrate the different manufacturing methods of paints, pigments and varnishes.
  4. CO4 : Discuss the various manufacturing processes and sketch the flow sheets of hydrogen carbon dioxide and acetylene. Explain the separation of oxygen and nitrogen by liquefaction process of Linde cycle.
  5. CO5 : Discuss various feed stocks, Explain the various methods of manufacturing processes of ammonia, urea, ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, phosphoric acid, single super phosphate and triple super phosphate
  6. CO6 : Discuss the various manufacturing processes and sketch the flow sheets of Potassium chloride, NPK fertilizer, Graphite, Alum, Silicon carbide and calcium carbide

UNIT-1: Water and its treatment Duration: 7 Periods (L: 5- T:2)

Sources of water – causes of scale formation – removal – water softening methods – Municipal water treatment – Lime soda process – Zeolite process- ion exchange process -Osmosis.

UNIT-2: Industrial chemicals and Industrial acids: Duration: 12 Periods (L: 9 – T: 3)

UNIT -3: Industrial gases Duration:8 Periods(L: 6- T:2)

Hydrogen – steam hydrocarbon reforming process, Oxygen and Nitrogen – liquefaction method – LindeFrankle cycle method – modified Linde Frankle cycle method-Carbon dioxidemanufacture by different methods.

UNIT 4: Nitrogenous fertilizers Phosphate industries Duration: 13 Periods(L: 9 – T:4)

UNIT -6: Silicate products Paints, pigments and varnishes

Cement by dry and wet process -types of cement and its applications -Glass- types of glasses and its applications – glass manufacture – silicate products Paints -Constituents-manufacture by mixing method-pigments- Different coloured pigments-manufacture of Lithophone, Tio2 and chromium oxide-Varnishes by oxidation and polymerization of drying oils- Rubber and plastic paints

Suggested Student Activities:

  1. Prepare a report with illustrations of the equipment on water treatment by visiting a nearby municipal water treatment plant.
  2. Prepare a study report on recovery of CO2 from various sources.
  3. Write a report on the advantages and disadvantages of nitrogenous fertilizers and can they be replaced by organic fertilizers
  4. Write a report about manufacture of paints, pigments and varnishes other than mentioned in the syllabus.
  5. Prepare models / charts for any manufacturing process.
  6. Group discussion/Quiz
