Course Outcomes:
- CO1 Analyse particle shape and size, mixed particle sizes and apply the principles of screen analysis
- CO2 State the importance and principles of storage and handling of materials and identify suitable conveyors for specific applications. Demonstrate and operate the different types of conveyors
- CO3 State the importance of mixing and agitation in process industries and sketch and summarize the working principles of various types of mixers.
- CO4 State the principles, and apply the laws of size reduction, and illustrate the operation of various size reduction equipments and evaluate the power required in size reduction.
- CO5 Interpret and analyse various size separation methods, Fluid-solid separation methods and illustrate the operation of various size separation equipments, and classify, demonstrate and operate different types of fluid-solid separation equipments. Select the appropriate devices
- CO6 Classify filtration equipments, apply the principle of working of various types of filters, Demonstrate and operate the different types of filters
UNIT 1 – Properties of Particulate solids Duration: 10 Periods (L:7- T:3)
Particle size, shape, density and sphericity- mixed particle sizes and size analysis- specific surface, average particle size and particle population- Standard screening sieves viz Taylor standard series & Indian standard series- differential & cumulative screen analysis- actual & Ideal screens- Screen effectiveness- screen capacity.
UNIT 2 – Storage and conveyance of solids: Duration: 07 Periods (L: 55- T:15)

UNIT 3 -Mixing:
Objectives of mixing, Liquid-liquid mixers- paddles, turbines, propellers, agitators- Solid-liquid mixers, mixer for viscous masses- Banbury mixer, ribbon blenders, tumbling mixers.
UNIT 4 – Size Reduction: Duration: 14 Periods( L:10- T:4)
Principles of communition- Size Reduction laws- Efficiencies in size reduction- Size reduction equipments- Description and working of jaw crusher, gyratory crusher, roll crusher, hammer mill, ball mill, ultrafine grinder- Evaluation of angle of nip- critical speed of ball mill – Closed circuit grinding and open circuit grinding- simple problems on size reduction laws, critical speed and angle of nip.
UNIT 5 – Mechanical Separations: Duration: 12 Periods(L:9-T:3)

Each student should do any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before conduction, get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
- Prepare a model of Size reduction equipments and size separation equipment and write a report.
- Write a report about filters and conveyors other than mentioned in the syllabus.
- Write a report on different Standard sieves available in the market with their size ranges.
- Prepare a study report on Separation of fine Particles from fluids by methods other than that mentioned in the syllabus content
- Each student should visit library to refer to manual/Journals of Chemical Engineering
- Each student should visit the Lab to know the equipments used for size separation and size reduction.
