6. Testing of Serviceability and dyed fabric properties Periods: 12 (L:9, T:3)
Serviceability properties -importance of choice of instrument and choice of Abradant – the purpose of testing fabric wear-causes of abrasive wear- working principle of Flat Abrasion tester and Flex Abrasion tester , Martindale Abrasion and pilling tester-importance of pilling in fabric quality -pilling rating factors -measurement of fabric pilling on ICI pilling and image analysis – Principles of testing dyed fabric – grey scale, Fastness to light, Fastness to washing or laundering , fastness to dry cleaning, fastness to hot pressing, Fastness to sea water and hot water, Fastness to chlorination or bleaching , Colour fastness to crocking / rubbing Colour fastness to perspiration, Colour fastness to water spotting, method of testing for class of dye in the dyed fabric , method of Identification of dye stuff in the dyed fabric
Student Activities
- Prepare a chart showing routine tests conducted for fibres, yarns, fabrics and garments and the instrument used for the same.(PO2,PO3,PO4)
- Visit a spinning mill and take a note of sampling methods and number of tests conducted for texting different fibre, yarn and fabric.(PO2,PO3)
- Take a hygrometer from the lab, find out the relative humidity in different laboratories in the department(PO1,PO3)
- Go to a ginning mill, Collect a sample of cotton from the loose cotton storage area and from stored bale, find out the moisture % in the laboratory and compare. Report the observations.(PO3,PO8)
- Prepare a chart showing fastness ratings of dyed fabrics for different media of colour fading. .(PO2,PO3,PO6)
- Measure the moisture regain of the cotton and polyester yarns individually and also measure the moisture regain of blended yarn. Compare these values to check the formula for moisture regain of blend component. .(PO2,PO10)
- Collect suiting and shirting fabrics, compare their properties by measurement and submit a report Collect Polyester and cotton fabrics, compare their properties by measurement and submit a report .(PO2,PO3)
