UNIT 1 – INTRODUCTION OF PACKAGE DESIGN, OPTIMUM CUSHIONING SELECTIONS Duration: 10 Periods(L:6-T:4)

Introduction, objectives of package design, definition, function, scope of packaging field. Package design factors – discuss the various factors to be considered for design of the package. The role of designer in product cost and the companys profit – Design conditions, safety factors, impact design criterion, horizontal impact, vertical cushioning displacement, design cushioning theory, application of force deformation curves, application of load curves, spring contents – Area under load deflection curve, load energy curve, force energy – load curve, shock force static weight curve, interpretation of thickness optimum, increasing energy absorption of increase efficiency, cushioning factors, comparison of cushioning efficiency, cushioning reliability, displacement included in calculation using to determine effect of varying drop conditions, economics of optimum cushioning – Use of tension spring mounting systems, schematic diagram of tension spring package, design of tension spring package – Full suspension package, non-linear energy absorption load factors for vertical drops, design considerations.
