Course Outcomes:

  1. CO1 Explain the mechanical properties and describe the different types of stress, strains and elastic constants and compute the factor of safety in sustainability of material aspects
  2. CO2 Interpret the Variation of moment of inertia for different Mechanical Engineering Sections
  3. CO3 Draw and Compare the shear force and bending moment diagram on beams under varying load conditions
  4. CO4 Define the terminology related to fluid properties, pressure and its measurements and compute forces on immersed vertical plane surfaces. Apply the hydraulic principles in solving problems on discharge and pressure measurements using flow measuring devices. To analyse the forces and its head
  5. CO5 Verify the flow parameters related to pipes to measure the various losses of head through pipes
  6. CO6 Apply knowledge and Select, operate and maintain various pneumatic elements for a particular low cost automation application in sustainable manufacturing system and its impact on society.

UNIT 1 SIMPLE STRESS AND STRAINS

Application of statics, To identify the nature and effect of tensile, compressive and shear forces, To define the terms stress, strain, modules of elasticity, poisons ratio, To draw typical stress vs strain curve for a M.S Specimen, To mention the significance of factor of safety, To compute stress, strain, values on uniform sections and composite sections. To write the relation between elastic constants E,N,K & 1/m. STRAIN ENERGY: To know the meaning of resilience, To write an expression for resilience. To compute instantaneous stress developed in bodies subjected to gradual / sudden / impact loads

UNIT 3 SHEAR FORCE BENDING MOMENT DIAGRAMS Duration: 10 Periods

Definition – Shear Force and Bending Moment -Types of beams, types of load acting on beams ,Sagging & Hogging Bending Moment and its importance -sign convention to draw SFD and BMD- Concept of Maximum bending moment, Point of Contra flexure & its importance -Drawing S.F & B.M Diagram for Cantilever, Simply Supported Beams subjected to Point Load and U.D.L

UNIT 4 – PROPERTIES AND BEHAVIOR OF FLUIDS DURATION: 10 Periods

Define a fluid- Differentiate between compressible and incompressible fluids-State the various units used in Hydraulics-Define various properties of fluids and state their units, Define intensity of pressure, differentiate the gauge, absolute pressure and vacuum pressure and state their units. Explain the working principle of various instruments used for determining the pressure of Fluids. Distinguish between laminar flow and turbulent flow, State the various types of energies and the total energy-Know about the velocity of a flowing liquid. Understand the discharge equation and equation of continuity of flow-State Bernoullis equation and its application in hydraulics-Solve problems (simple) on law of continuity flow,. Bernoullis equation, Explain the working principle of venturi meter, Pitot tube, water and current meters-Solve simple problems and venturi meter.
