Course Outcomes:

At the end of the course, the student will have the ability to:

  1. CO1: Analyze the various metallurgical factors affecting mechanical properties of different metals and alloys
  2. CO2: Explain the tensile test and calculate various mechanical properties from test data
  3. CO3: Describe basic mechanisms of fatigue and creep behavior of engineering materials and their importance in materials design
  4. CO4: Explain impact test, toughness and types of fracture of metals
  5. CO5: Explain how to select and conduct a hardness test to determine the hardness of a given material
  6. CO6: Differentiate various defect types and describe the main criteria to select the appropriate NDT methods for the product

Unit 1 Tension test Duration: 08 periods

Introduction. Stress strain diagram and its salient features. Tensile Properties and their calculation from test data, solving numerical problems, effect of temperature on tensile properties

Unit 2 Creep test Duration: 10 periods

Unit 3 Impact test and Fracture Duration: 08 periods

Impact test – Test specimens, principles and procedures of conducting the tests. Notch sensitivity, Notch toughness, transition temperature. Definition, ductile and brittle fracture, cohesive strength Equation, Griffith theory of brittle fracture

Unit 4 Fatigue test

Importance, different cycles, S-N Curve, endurance limit, Fatigue failures, effect of various factors on fatigue.
