Course Outcome:
On successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
- To List the various Raw materials for making Leather and differentiate between them
- To state the substances present in Hides/Skins and Explain the purpose of curing with its effects
- To List and classify the Pre tanning operations of Leather manufacture
- To Explain the Bating, Pickling, degreasing operation of Leather Manufacture
- To understand and explain different methods of Chrome Tanning used in Leather processing
- Able to make use of different vegetable tanning materials in making Leather
Unit I: Hides and Skins:
Definition of Hides and Skins – exotic skins – difference between hides and skins – different source of hides and their classification based on region, size etc – and different materials present in hides and skins – defects in hides and skins.

Unit IV: Chrome Tanning:
Tanning – Purpose of tanning – Classification – Chrome tanning – Types of chrome tanning – Basification – Boil test -Shrinkage temperature.

Application of soaking ,Liming , bating, pickling, in day to day life. The physiochemical changes takes place in chrome tanning and vegetable tanning.
