Course Outcomes:

At the end of course student should be able to

  1. CO : Calculate the stress and strain acting on the given material under different axial load conditions and to understand the elastic behavior of metals.
  2. CO : Understand the concepts of fluid pressure and other properties.
  3. CO : Assess the geometrical properties like C.G and M.I of symmetrical and non symmetrical laminas.
  4. CO : Comprehend the basic types of fluid flows and energy possessed in a fluid flow.
  5. CO : Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the simple load system on Cantilever, Simply supported and Over hanging beams.
  6. CO : Detail about the governing functions of hydraulic operated machines.

UNIT-1: Simple stresses and strains Periods 10 (L: 70 -T: 30)

Introduction-Load- Force – Difference between load and force- Types of loads – Mechanical properties: Strength, Stiffness, Elasticity, Plasticity, Ductility, Malleability, Toughness, Hardness, Brittleness, Creep and Fatigue – Stress, Strain – Various types of Stresses and Strains: Tensile, Compressive, Shear, Bending – Hookes law-Modulus of elasticity- Stress v/s Strain diagram- Problems on total elongation, Stress induced, Strain in bars of varying cross sections- Ultimate stress – Factor of Safety- Design or Allowable stress -Youngs modulus,- Rigidity Modulus – Bulk Modulus – Poisons ratio – Relation among three elastic constants- Problems related to three elastic constants-Thermal stresses and strains-Related problems.

UNIT-3: Geometrical properties of sections Periods 10 (L: 60 – T: 40)

Centre of gravity of regular laminas: Square, Rectangle, Triangle and Circle – Centroid -Neutral axis-Inertia -Types of Moment of Inertias: Mass moment of Inertia, Area moment of Inertia and Polar Moment of Inertia – Application of these Moment of Inertias and formulae Definition of area Moment of Inertia or 2nd Moment of Inertia – Radius of gyration -Section modulus of Square, Rectangle, Triangle and Circle – Parallel and perpendicular axis theorems – Calculation of moment of inertia of L, I and T- sections.

Types of fluid flows: Steady and Unsteady, Uniform and Non-uniform, Laminar and Turbulent flows – Concept of Reynolds number -Continuity Equation -Assumptions made for Bernoullis theorem – Statement of Bernoullis theorem, Equation and its Practical applications – Problems on Bernoullis equation – Flow of fluid through pipes and orifice -Hydraulic coefficients – Loss of head in pipes due to friction: Darcys and Chezys formula (without proof) – Hydraulic gradient – Total energy line – Power transmitted through pipes, efficiency and condition for maximum power transmission (without derivation)- Simple problems.
