Course Outcomes:

  1. Explain the basic concepts in thermodynamics and to know which are applicable to refrigeration and air conditioning in practical point of view.
  2. Describe the meaning of refrigeration and to know different terms involved in it to solve the problems related to refrigeration.
  3. Describe various air refrigeration methods and solve the problems related to it.
  4. Illustrate various vapour compression refrigeration methods and analyse the different thermodynamic process regarding the VCR system.
  5. Explain various vapour absorption refrigeration methods and to analyse the different flow processes of refrigerant, absorbent regarding the VAR system.
  6. Illustrate the properties of air with the help of psychrometric chart.

1.0 Basics of Thermodynamics :

Define pressure, absolute pressure, atmospheric pressure, critical pressure, volume, temperature, saturation temperature, critical temperature, heat, work, specific heat, internal energy, enthalpy, entropy.Simple problems on different thermodynamic properties.

3.0 Air Refrigeration:

Principle, open air and closed air refrigeration, differences, Carnot air refrigeration, Bell- Coleman cycle.

4.0 Vapour Compression Refrigeration(Vcr) System :

Principle, components, analysis and division of VCR system, condensing unit, VCR cycle, refrigeration effect, compressor capacity, mass flow rate and volume flow rate, COP of VCR system, Wet compression and Dry compression, Sub-cooling.

5.0 Vapour Absorption Refrigeration (Var) System:

Principle, components, analysis of VAR system, COP, properties of refrigerant-absorbent pair, Electrolux refrigerator, Lithium Bromide and Solar refrigeration.
