Course Outcomes:
Upon Completion of the Course the Student Shall be able To:
- Describe the fundamentals, properties of minerals / ores and their occurrence.
- Evaluate the fitness of ores for the metal extraction.
- Describe the preparation of ores and the operation and working of the concerned equipment.
- Sorting of ores according to their sizes and the relevant industrial machinery.
- Explain the separation of dissimilar particles associated with the ores.
- Describe the processes sequentially that are carried on the ores.
1.0 Ores and Oredressing:
Definition of native metal, mineral, ore & ore dressing, physical properties of minerals, minerals of commercially important metals, difference between rich and lean ore, metal content and chemical composition of the important ores, advantages of ore dressing, important mineral deposits in India, important operations of ore dressing.

3.0 Comminution of Ores:
Introduction – stages of crushing, primary crushing: Blake type jaw crushersecondary crushing: Roll crusher- Angle of Nip of Roll crusher, Grinding -definition & classification of various mills, rod mill, pebble mill, Ball mill, comparison of crushing & grinding. Laws of Comminution.
4.0 Sizing / Screening of Ores :
Introduction – sizing methods- screening types- mesh size & mesh number- ISI Designation of mesh number-screen analysis by Rotap sieve shaker -tabulation of results- capacity of screen and effecting factors.
5.0 Classification of Ores:
Introduction -movement of solids in fluids-free settling,hindered settling ,laminar flow,turbulent flow, Reynolds number-principle of classification, Stoke’s law of settling – mechanism of classification, working principle of mechanical classifier- Dorr’s classifier and Hydro cyclone classifier.
