The detailed syllabus of plastics testing and characterization laboratory is as follows. <\/p>\n<p><h4>Course Objectives:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>To create the knowledge about the different testing techniques and its basic concepts for evaluating the chemical, mechanical, electrical, optical, thermal, and permanence properties of plastic materials.<\/li>\n<li>To enable the students to identify and compare the properties of different plastics materials<\/li>\n<li>To understand about characterisation techniques and equipments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><h4>List of Experiments:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Determination of tensile, flexural and compression properties of plastics materials using universal testing machine.<\/li>\n<li>Determination of Rate of flow of plastics (Melt flow index)<\/li>\n<li>Identify the given plastic material using FTIR spectrum<\/li>\n<li>Composition analysis of plastics composites using DSC and TGA<\/li>\n<li>Determine the hardness (Shore A &amp; D, Barcol and Rockwell) of plastic material<\/li>\n<li>Determine the abrasion resistance of Plastic materials<\/li>\n<li>Determine the impact strength (Izod, Charpy) of Plastic materials and dart impact strength of plastic films<\/li>\n<li>Determine the Density, Moisture content and water absorption for plastic materials.<\/li>\n<li>Testing of electrical properties of plastics a) Arc resistance b) Surface and Volume resistance c) Comparative tracking index (CTI) d) Dielectric strength e) Dielectric constant and dissipation factor<\/li>\n<li>Determine the filler content (Ash content) and TiO2 content in plastics<\/li>\n<li>Determination of Heat deflection temperature and Vicat softening point of plastics materials<\/li>\n<li>Determine the moulding shrinkage of given plastic materials<\/li>\n<p>(Any Nine of the above)\n<\/ol>\n<\/p>\n<p><h4>Course Outcomes:<\/h4>\n<p>Upon completion of this course, the students would be able to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Determine important properties of plastic materials<\/li>\n<li>Prepare specimen by injection moulding and contour cutting<\/li>\n<li>Will be able to get knowledge about the different testing techniques and its basic concepts for evaluating the chemical, mechanical, electrical, optical, thermal, and permanence properties of plastic materials.<\/li>\n<li>Will learn about sophisticated characterisation equipments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><h4>Text Books:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Vishu Shah, Hand Book of Plastics Testing Technology, John Wiley &amp; Sons.
