The detailed syllabus of biochemistry laboratory is as follows. <\/p>\n<p>  <title>Biochemistry Laboratory<\/title><\/p>\n<h4>Aim<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>To learn and understand the principles behind the qualitative and quantitative estimation of biomolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, metabolites etc.,) and laboratory analysis of the same in the body fluids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>List of Experiments:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>General guidelines for working in biochemistry lab (theory)<\/li>\n<li>Units of volume, weight, density and concentration measurements and their range in biological measurements. Demonstration of proper use of volume and weight measurement devices.<\/li>\n<li>Accuracy, precision, sensitivity and specificity (theory)<\/li>\n<li>Preparation of buffer -titration of a weak acid and a weak base.<\/li>\n<li>Qualitative tests for carbohydrates &#8211; distinguishing reducing from non-reducing sugars and keto from aldo sugars.<\/li>\n<li>Quantitative method for amino acid estimation using ninhydrin &#8211; distinguishing amino from imino acid.<\/li>\n<li>Protein estimation by Biuret and Lowrys methods.<\/li>\n<li>Protein estimation by Bradford and spectroscopic methods.<\/li>\n<li>Extraction of lipids and analysis by TLC.<\/li>\n<li>Estimation of nucleic acids by absorbance at 260 nm and hyperchromic effect (demo).<\/li>\n<li>Enzymatic assay: phosphatase from potato.<\/li>\n<li>Enzymatic assay: estimation of glucose by GOD-POD method after hydrolysis of starch with acid and specificity of the enzymatic method.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Equipment Needed for 20 Students<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Autocalve 1<\/li>\n<li>Hot Air Oven 1<\/li>\n<li>Incubators 2<\/li>\n<li>Light Microscopes 4<\/li>\n<li>Incubator Shaker 1<\/li>\n<li>Colorimeter 2<\/li>\n<li>Laminar Flow Chamber 2<\/li>\n<li>Glassware:<\/li>\n<li>Test tubes (atleast 10 per student)<\/li>\n<li>Beakers &#8211; 50 ml, 100 ml, 250 ml one each per student, 500 ml and 1000 ml atleast 5 per batch of 20 students<\/li>\n<li>Watch glasses one per student<\/li>\n<li>Petridishes as required, glass cuvettes as needed<\/li>\n<li>Burette &#8211; one per student<\/li>\n<li>Glass pipette &#8211; one each in 0.5 ml, 1 ml, 5 ml and 10 ml with suitable pipette aid.<\/li>\n<li>TLC plate as required for the experiment.<\/li>\n<li>Chemicals: glucose, fructose, galactose, maltose, starch, amino acids, DNA, RNA, lipids and commercial enzymes as required.
