UGC NET: Is It An Alternative To GATE?

Recently I received many requests asking for UGC NET. I also had this in my ‘to write’ list for a long time. I hope this will many students to understand the difference between GATE and NET. On the same time they can take advantage of these exams if possible.

Basically National Eligibility Test (NET) is same as GATE, but for Science and Humanities students for research and teaching possibilities. It is conducted by National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC). On the basis of the results one stand eligible for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

With the expansion and interdisciplinary research few engineering streams also covered in the span of science, especially computer engineering. Now the test is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science. NET is conducted twice in a year generally in the months of June and December.

NET qualified candidates get INR 8000/- for first two years and next three years INR 9000/- . This scholarship is given for research by UGC. This also includes a Contingency grant of INR 10000/- for first two years and 20500/- for remaining period. For more details do pay visit to UGC NET.

Now let’s get into the question is it an alternative for GATE or not. The answer is yes and no. If you are only looking for M.Tech admissions the answer is no and if you are looking for a research position then yes. NET will help you to apply almost all institutes and research centers like CSIR, TIFR, and other institutes apart from IITs and NITs.

If you are eyeing for a research position then I recommend you to look into all competitive exams that can fetch you a scholarship for conducting research. There are many other agencies and industries that give scholarships for research. Do have a look into few good places to do PhD in India for institutes and other details.

Hope this post helped you to understand what is NET exams is and how we can take it a as alternative to GATE exam. Also, I am looking forward to write about research and its futures prospects in India and abroad, but need to make few decisions about publishing.

  43. rajesh pandianm

    Sir,

    A basic doubt.

UGC NET is only for people who have completed their master degree and not BE/BTECH/UG student///

I am afraid if my understanding is correct or not

    http://ugcnetonline.in/eligibility.php

    1. Dr Aditi

Yes, you are correct in your learnings respected sir. UGC NET/SET only recognizes post-graduate degree holders eligible to sit for their annual tests which are conducted twice a year. Thank you.

  44. Yogesh

Sir thanks for the post…i am waiting for your next post on research and its futures prospects in India and abroad.

  45. sibnath halder

i am student of b-tch (ECE).am i eligible for net exam

    1. Dr Aditi

No !!! You have to be a post-graduate first with a minimum of 55% and if you belong to the reserved category of SC/ST then obtaining 50% percent minimum is necessitated. However , if you wish you can also apply for UGC-NET/SLET examination while you are appearing for your masters degree. If you are successful in cracking NET or SLET exam during that time your eligibility would be reckoned as provisional unless you pass your masters with a minimum of 55% if you belong to unreserved category or 50% if you belong to SC/ST aanlogous reserved category.

  46. Janani

Are M.Sc Candidates who qualify GATE eligible to get scholarship for pursuing PhD apart from IISc or IIT? As many persons say GATE qualified candidates will receive scholarship only from professors having funded projects and not from MHRD. Even many institutes ask only for CSIR qualified candidates and not GATE. but some institutes admit Btech or Mtech candidates qualified in GATE and not M.Sc. Some institutes just cancel the entrance test alone for GATE qualified candidtes. Please advice.

    1. Lokesh

Hi im finished 10th std in tamil nadu im centum in science. i choosed group 1B{csc}… I wish to study B.E..so plz tell me which course is best for my future and my aim is robotics engineer..is this correct..!!!

  47. saiful

NET qualified candidates get INR 8000/- for first two years and next three years INR 9000/- . This scholarship is given for research by UGC. This also includes a Contingency grant of INR 10000/- for first two years and 20500/- for remaining period. For more details do pay visit to UGC NET.

Though the ugc/csir web site are not updated but the fellowship are now INR 16,000 /-& INR 18,000/- that I know……..during my Ph.D last stage (2009-10), it was INR 14,000/- and INR 16,000/-

  48. Hemant

It was good article but i have one doubt, I have heard that master degree is pre-requisite for UGC NET. If it is true than we have to do Mtech or any other master degree.
Can you please also provide the list of exams or industries which provide scholarship for conducting research?

  49. Anuraj

    Hello,
I would like to ask is possible to give UGC NET after B.tech

    1. Ab

No,Because for UCG Net master degree with 55% marks for gen&OBC and 50% for SC/ST candidate.

    2. arun kumar

yes you can sit for jrf only after compliting your b. tech see the csir eligibility criteria.
      but you can’t get net.
