Top Engineering colleges in India – Ranking

2009 May 10
by Zahid

Engineering college rankings are my great interest, as I studied from a private college and ended up finishing my PhD in IIT. Since 2005 I see ranking by different agencies and magazines, which never presented it from a students’ perspective.

Most of the ranking are based on some assumption and after a listing they again release revised list modifying some ranks.

Here I present a list for top ranked Engineering schools in India based on Student quality and preference, Faculty, Infrastructure and Industry interface or placements. This Top Engineering Colleges in India 2009 ranking will definitely help students to decide their career paths. Also to help with engineering courses a good analysis of each engineering course with future scope is given at Best engineering courses.

A genuine effort to find is made to find Top Private Engineering Colleges in India and also tried Ranking of NITs in India to help students find right place for their career. The list of Top NITs in India is a good resource for M.Tech and AIEEE admissions.

If you have any question, suggestions or need more information, please don’t hesitate to drop a comment. I will get back with more information within a week time.

I kept new IITs up in the ranking even though they are quite new because of quality of students joining and IIT Hyderabad little up in ranking because a lot of students from Andhra Pradesh make into to IITs and they prefer IIT Hyderabad over less rank IITs.

For a detailed post on why new IITs are top ranked check this.

hi zahid… thanks for developing such an useful blog… it definitely shows a clear way for admission to m.tech… can u present the previous year cut off scores for various institutes so that it will be very useful to select some colleges in this bunch… i have such a list for some nits and if u permit i can upload it on your blog…

  6. 2009 May 24

Thanks a lot to everyone for your encouragement :)

Ravi: Thanks a lot for appreciation. You may have not heard of few colleges down the ranking, but truly speaking, given a chance to me for taking admission I will definitely go with this order. Therefore, I strongly believe this is the best ever ranking.

Abhishek: I doubt with 20000-250000 rank someone get a chance to study in NITs. They take admissions purely based on merit in AIEEE or state’s Common Entrance Test.

Nikita: First of all accept my heartiest congratulations for two calls from elite institutes of India.
Second is your question about which place to go. Ranking wise no doubt IITK beats all other institutes. But if you think like me to finish PhD early in three years or so then IITD could be well too. But if you want to really work hard and live with really exciting people, please go ahead with IITK. IITK may take some time for PhD, like 5 to 6 years, it also depend on guide. If I am in your place I will with IITK and find the best guide there. Best in the sense that he should have good publication and reputation in PhD students.
Do read my coming posts exclusive for PhD students to help in selecting guide and finishing PhD with good results and publications.
    Good luck with your decision.

Nitesh: I am sorry if you are SRM Univ. student. Did your read the few lines I wrote before starting the ranking. I really dont believe in TOI and Outlook ranking. I ranked colleges if fortune 500 companies visited their campus for recruitment or they hosted an international summits recognized by IEEE or DBLP or concerning subject societies. Student diversity is also no too great in SRM as Nirma, Thapar and other mentioned colleges from 48-55.
I am on my way to post a ranking for top colleges in Tamil Nadu, you find it there :)
Just to share with you, we have more than 1000 unique visitors a day for this page and received many mails from top companies for sharing more information on this.

    Hemanth: Thanks a lot dude~~
I m almost done with IITs cut off for this year and also asked my friends from IITs to help me in this regard. My post is coming for cutoffs very soon.
You are most welcome to submit your information on this blog. Lets make it useful for our new students.
Thanks a lot for support :)

Great job done….it will surely be of immense help for young people who are quite confused by the spurious rankings being published in some print media. I would also be personally satisfied if you can somehow take some steps to stop the occurrence of such dubious reports which can cause huge loss to a student’s career by misleading them( As per one such survey the reader gets the idea that Lovely professional University is better than ISM Dhanbad or NITs at Bhopal and Dugapur!!

  11. 2009 May 28

Thanks all of you, again for comment and concerns.

Maria: That is definitely a good college but the colleges in ranking are better than that. Dont forget to check my new posts for private college rankings. As I am quite busy at office since last few days, these statewise lists are delayed :(

Ankit: You got a good percentage, you should give a hit at BIT Mesra.
Anyways, I am really thankful for your concern about my ranking. This will definitely help me improve the quality and trust.
Regarding Amity University, they already got the recognition from UGC two years back. You can visit University site for details:

And also visit and check other forum for their status.

Also, let me know if you find anything wrong with their status, lets make this information helpful to all the students.

  16. 2009 June 1

Thanks a lot to the readers for their comments and suggestions.

Ankit: Let me know your AIEEE rank, then I can help you to figure out where all better places for you.

CS: Thanks a lot for encouragement. NSIT delhi is a superb place to study, but the above said colleges except from 48-55 are better than that. NSIT is definitely a top collage in Delhi and surounding areas after IITs and NITs. In the last paragraph I aslo mention why I added the last few private universities.

Jayant: ISMU is definitely a top institute in India, there research and industry interface is almost like IITs. Their placements are good and almost all top companies visit there for campus selections. I will give it top priority after IITs.

    Visit : http://www.ismdhanbad.ac.in/noticeboard/placement.htm
for placement details ISMU. Check the details for company list.

Vikas Agarwal: I strongly believe you should be able to make it to IITs this time or it will be a very close context. Dont forget to attend the counseling. This year admission are made into all new IITs including IIT Himachal and IIT Indore.
IIT Himachal is mentored by IIT Roorkee and IIT Indore in mentored by IIT Bombay. Work is in great progress in all new IITs. By next four years they will be in line with old IITs. I strongly believe opportunities will be almost same in IITs. All the best with admission. Do my post on new IITs in couple of days.

    Sir,
Its great that you are trying to clear all doubts regarding the rankings.

In my humble opinion Indian Institute Of information Technology, Allahabad should feature prominently in the list.

In AIEEE 2008 its opening rank was 827 and closing was at around 5300.
Also, many multinationals like yahoo visited in the campus placements.

If you consider the rankings of http://www.topcoder.com, some of the best coders in India come from IIIT Allahabad.

I request you to please review this information and suitably edit the rankings.

  18. 2009 June 2

Dear Divij: Thanks a lot friend for the concern. Next year we are planing to divide list based on each field in Engineering, like best colleges in CSE, ECE, … etc. This year we concentrated on overall status of the colleges, including conventional branches like mechanical, civil and instrumentation. Most of the new collages either don’t have these branches or don’t have good placement and infrastructure for them. Computer science is really a good stream and most of good colleges have a great placements for this branch.

Recently, I got a similar request from a private engineering college that has a high ranking in TOI saying that Microsoft and Yahoo visited their campus with many other top companies. I verified it personally and it was correct. Lucky those private college students, I wish them a great luck in future too. But the overall placement was around 60% and specially mech. and civil had a tough time. Therefore, this time we considered overall performance of college. If the college has many branches and did well overall then ranked higher.

I would definitely like to ask you to help us for next year ranking. Lets make this a really informative place for all students, to help them realize their dreams.

Thanks a lot Divij again for the concern and help.

  22. 2009 June 3

Sameer: it looks difficult to get into NITs for your choice of engineering. You may get a chance for Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering but chances are bleak, be prepare for alternatives.

Surya: Congrats!!! If I m in your place I would go to Computer Science in new IITs instead of going to Metallurgy in Roorkee or Guwahati. I see most of the IITian with metallurgy background either going for Ms or some software companies. So better be at CS or Elecronics and follow the stream as career too.
I wish you good luck with the decision you make.

Nakul: Well you can get a chance in new IITs. If your main concern is good placements then IITs and BITS are better than NUS. NUS and NTU usually have management and banking related companies in campus placements, where as IITs and BITS have Both management and Top Engineering companies recruiting. The advantage of NUS/NTU is that you can have international assignments after your studies. This also possible with IITs and BITS, I got placed in Samsung Electronics Korea directly from campus selections. But these are rare and competitive.
I hope, I answered you. Good luck with your decision.

Venu: Yes definitely. New IITs will be better than the NITW as they get better quality of students, infrastructure, faculty and placements. Moreover, they are starting with the internationally renowned and well established brand for engineering studies. Therefore, I strongly believe they will be better than Top NITs.

Himanshu: 7875 is not good in AIEEE, better try hard to get admission through IIT- JEE with 8038. You will get an almost similar branch in IIT. Try with IIT-JEE rank ISMU Dhanbaad and IT BHU are also good. Give first preference to IIT name. All the best the counseling.

  33. 2009 June 5

Jugal: sir, need not to worry about your son’s admission to private engineering college. If you are not very particular about some branch of engineering, then he can get admission in NIT Rourkela. In the worst case I would ask you make choice according to the list I have given. First NITs and then IIITs and in worst case some private college, which I dont believe will happen.
Delhi college of engineering is a good college give a hit there too. Leaving out NIT Rourkela will be a risk.
    Good luck with admission sir.

Himanshu: BIT Goa and Hyderabad are relatively new campuses and I dont have any placement statistics with me. But Faculty and exposure at BIT is far better than other private colleges and deemed universities.

with 8038 rank it looks really difficult. But as most of the people are confused between NITs and new IITs, and others are doing their best to make them confuse, you may get a chance. I feel you should try there. If not IITs you may get a chance in ISMU Dhanbad, IT-BHU….etc.

Saurabh: The above colleges are cream of India except 48-55. VIT is a private university and comes under entirely different class. I m planing to post ranking of private universities, just got struck with huge work at office so got delayed.

Abhishek: Going to less than IITs is not a better idea. You may even get Computer Science Dual degree this year. Good luck with admissions. If u need any suggestions please feel free. I really want to welcome you to elite community of IITians.

  37. 2009 June 7

Prateek: Try some private engineering college. Have you written any other test. Because with 21000 rank you can not make it to IITs or some institute that considers IIT JEE.

Vinod Agrawal: Sir, Thank you very much for appreciation and encouragement. With 7257 I think it difficult to get into engineering. But still if you are lucky then may get a chance for Integrated M.Tech or dual degree programs. MSc is also highly competitive and have bright future in IITs. Almost all companies consider them for recruitment. Moreover, there are good chances to joining top US universities for research with handsome scholarships. I feel joining IITs is better than NIT Chemical.

Nitesh: With 17500 rank the branches you mentioned will be difficult try metallurgy and chemical engineering. You can try for newly established universities.

  65. 2009 July 1

Ayush: I prefer Galgotia over Amity. Because of faculty, placements and reputation came from their publishing house.

Jeshrel: There is not specialization as Networking. But networking is one of the subjects taught. I prefer IITs for M.E. and above ranking will help to figure out where you suite.

Mayank Singhal: prefer any top NITs. There have an excellent reputation and well known in the industry and academia.

Maulik: SVNIT is best for you, because of it reputation in engineering studies. This may help you get into research at some very good university.

    M. Ram: Sorry but dont be offended, as you can visit http://www.inspirenignite.com/best-private-engineering-colleges-in-tamil-nadu-2009-affiliated-to-anna-university/ and check the ranking of Valliammai Engineering college, which is a member college of SRM group. This gives the student preference to SRM university, which is also local to some place.

Amit Roy: That is a good college. But for M.Tech prefer it when you dont have a better option.

Haritha: IIT Bhubaneshwar will be among top 25 colleges. When the list was prepared its admissions were not announced. Therefore, missed it.

    Mahesh: My preferene

    1. BITS,Pilani
    2. NIT Durgapur
    3. NIT Krukshetra
    4. DCE ( depends)
    5. NIT jalandhar

Mayank Singhal: Electronics and communication deals with medthods and electronic products related to communications.
Electronics and Instrumentation deals with the methods and tools what measure some units using electronic instruments.

BE and B.Tech are same, few univ call them BE and others call as B.Tech, but when you go to US its all BS. So dont worry about that :)

Rajdeep: Even though BITS Pilani is a private college they attract great faculty. The quality they maintained it similar to IITs. Jadavpur univ. is great its faculty is also good, but when we compare with IITs, definitely there is difference.

These IIT’s are in the first year of their beginning and no way they can match the infrastructure and faculty’s of BITS and Anna University.

Akshay Navalakha: please refer to my post for details of why new IITs are better http://www.inspirenignite.com/new-iits-vs-old-nits-or-universities/
If you are not convienced please post a comment there. For IITH being at top please refer the this post again.

Vivek Chauhan: I prefer IITKgp if I m in your place. As placements and Alumni network of IITKgp is definitely better than IIT G.

Sahil Jain: It usually happen when you go a Institute with lot of exceptions and see that they are not met. I dont see any point in regretting, because you are in a good place definitely better than some engineering college in Haryana. Now what you need is to plan for future and work hard without expecting anything from Institute and faculty. Believe me NIT patana is a great place to study. Few of my friends had similar problem with IITR. But I liked it and always thought I at a great place, therefore finished PhD within three years and loved my stay there. Whereas, my friend they took 5 years and curse that place.
Sahil i suggest you only one thing dont hate your institute you will end up being a depressed candidate. Try to find what facilities are available use them to maximum extent. Go to sports and hobby clubs and make a schedule for every semester yo will like it.

Arunav, Kaushik: please refer to Akshay Navalakha’s answer. Kaushik, Anna university at 19th place.

Haritha: If I suggest you to go for JNTU as I feel civil engineering difficult for girls. On the other hand you get JNTU which is a good college and the field of engineering is great too. I wish you a great luck with your decision.

Anubhav: I agree with your opinion and that is why I included them in ranking. Thank for the suggestion.

Sumit: NIT Durgapur is definitely a premier engineering institute of the country according to student quality, faculty and placements. Research collaborations with other IITs and ISI kolkota make it a high profile engineering institute. I am seeing these rankings since 2005 and never satisfied by them. Therefore, decided to start this blog to help students genuinely. Finally I made it a big hit with great help and support by students like you. Thanks for comment and stay connected.

Ayush: Both are almost same. So make some other criteria to select one like fee, distance from home and consider other things. Education wise they are almost same.

Sameer: Obviously the choice is IIIT-Gowliar because of being far better to SGSITS Indore in every case, student quality, faculty and placements.

Ankur Singh: for best engineering course selection visit http://www.inspirenignite.com/which-is-the-best-engineering-course/ and about Galgotias fee structure you can make a call to its administrative office and inquire. Visit their web site you can find their telephone numbers.

Raman Deep Singh: KIIT,BHUBANESWAR is a good college. In fact this was at 56 rank but i eliminated it from list to make ranks till 55. Hope next year I will rank private universities separately. Thanks for the input.

Abhishek: If I m in you position I will definitely prefer ISMU as its a top institute and best for mining engineering in India. Placements are also great and you get Master degree in 5 years. Good luck with you decision.

Mayank Singhal: electronics and comm. at Jadavpur university is best and should be given top priority. All the best.

Ravindar Singh: my ranking for you choice is as follows

    1. NIT TRICHY
    2. NIT WARRANGAL
    3. NIT SURATHKAL
    4. BIT MESRA

Sayantan Ganguly: NIT Durgapur is very good college. Go ahead and take the admission but make sure that you work hard and get good percentage or CGPA before coming out. Also refer to answer give to Sumit’s question above.

Sandeep: please refer to http://www.inspirenignite.com/new-iits-vs-old-nits-or-universities/ before making the decision. Also refer to the comments by readers. This will definitely help you.

Harsha: Please read the same post again since beginning to ranking you will get the answer for it.

Prateek: RGIPT is new started and have very less faculty members, where as NIT Allahabad is well established Institute. And chemical engineering play a major role in petroleum industry too. If you want to go to petrolum industry that option is always open. I prefer NIT Alahabad over RGIPT.

    Mohit: My preference order is

    1.MANIT Bhopal
    2.PESIT, Bangalore
    3. SASTRA, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
    4. BITS Hyderabad
    5. SGSITS, Indore
    6.MIT pune
    7.PICT pune

Your rankings are quite satisfactory over others ranking as they keep colleges like VIT,Nirma Inst. Of Tech.,etc well ahead of us which is completely not acceptable to us.Most of the students in our college have just not made it to IITs & ISI and have landed here.So you can guess the quality of students here. Also there is a large scope of Summer projects & internships here in our college.

how much percentage one should have in higher secondary to get into top ranked govt colleges for mtech?

  110. 2009 August 30

Avishek: Basically for M.Tech your B.Tech percentage should not be counted. Most of the IITs give calls based on GATE score other who conduct written test and interview only consider for B.Tech percentile and they invite more candidates. Therefore it is always good to have high percentage but not mandatory for admission to Top Schools in India.
But when it comes to placements most of the companies will definitly look into your graduation records and if it falls less than 60% or 6.0 CGPA you will have tough time find a job in campus placements even in IITs. But you can always get on in off campus. Therefore i suggest you to get as much percentage as you can. All the best.

Well, most of the parents & students are highly interested in knowing the rank of the respective institute where their son/daughter is studying…it is good, no doubt. Try to analyse it from the NATION’s objective. Every nation is having an objective to advance in the field of technology, space, earth science & industry. Accordingly, they make centre of excellences where the young minds get trained. For giving training, they also ensure that right kind of young minds must be selected. In India, Nothing is tougher than JEE. If U see the marks of the qualified students in JEE, U will notice that hardly any difference in the competency level of candidates with A.I.R 2500 to the end of CML. Rather the collected data shows a very surprise findings that most of the >2500 JEE rank holders are not a coached product and perhaps this is the reason why they are performing better in study/sports at IIT campous. OK coming back to main issue, in our country, IITs/IT-BHU/ISMU/IISC are only the centre of excellence in the field of technology and JEE ensures the entry of right young minds. Thats all. whether IITD is rank no-1 or IITkgp is no-1….it makes no difference in the mind of the policy-makers of the nation. In fact(sorry to say), the products of BHU/ISMU/IIT-Roorkee have served the nation much more than other IITs. Standing nearby ill-old parents (with whatever resources) is much more better than Sending dollars from abroad to ill-parents. After independence, Nation needed engineers in India. Therefore please give salute to those engineers who stayed here and made the country progress. It will take lot of time for new IITs to prove that their products have serve the nation and the society. As new songs can’t replace old melodies of Lata/Kishore/Rafi/Mukesh… similarly new IITs can’t be better than Old IITs/bhu/ISMU/IISC. IITs alone have not created its brand image… The infrastructures they have plus the dedicated learned faculty and the kind of students joining through JEE…these all three are responsible for such a high brand of the Institute.

hi, while mentioning College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna Uinversity, i think, often the other constituent colleges of Anna University, namely Madras Institute of Technology, A C College of Technology and School of Architecture and Planning, which share the same resources with College of Engineering, Guindy are left out. the calliber of students entering these institutions are the same especially for Madras Institute of Technology where the cut-off mark differs by not more than 1 mark in most cases when compared to College of Engineering, Guindy. In fact we share the same syllabus, question paper, etc.i think this unwarranted exclusion can be avoided. as a matter of fact all four colleges are just university departments of Anna University.

it’s not a genuine ranking..It’s all crap. Dhirubhai Ambani …Gujarat must be among top 15. Look at the wonderful faculty pool (only top 5 IIts match such a brilliant faculty lineup), infrastructure, courseware etc there. It’s all eye opening dude… Just look into details you will find how many international publications at BTech & Mtech level go from any other institute as that from Dhirubhai Ambani (only IIts like delhi and bombay will stand there). Look at all the creativity stuff students regularly winning host of international awards year by year….just browse through the website guys you will know the facts….this space is very short to mention….I am not just praising here just because I graduated from here …if it was so I would have extolled about my masters school…TU delft.

Sir, thank you very much for your research on the above mentioned engineering colleges
but i have got few points to draw your attention. First, don’t you think IIT Hyderabad doesn’t deserve to be ahead of IIT Roorkee. Second, your list doesn’t includes JSS Noida and KIET Ghaziabad though they are good colleges with good reputation and infrastructure. How could you underestimate the caliber of these institutes when over 1.6 lac students eye for a seat in these colleges? You mentioned about Galgotias purely on the basis of their publishing house reputation and the case is very similar to that of Amity. In NCR, as far as I am concerned, JIIT Noida, KIET Gzb and JSS are much better than these two institutes.Third, I am definitely not convinced with the rankings of NSIT, New Delhi.

JU is not da only institute where students tend 2 b dissatisfied wid da authorities

but dere r better ways of protesting dan those mentioned in da links given by dark lord.
IIT n NIT students regularly hav causes of discontent, but they dont lock up teachers, clash with the police or take fasts unto death

it is often observed that peaceful methods like actually talking to the authorities or a signature campaign is often useful

personally, i feel that JU as an university is past its prime, n da chief cause is nothing but campus politics

  164. 2010 January 10
    dark lord permalink

    @ krish@b’lore : thank u 4 ur opinion

i am posting this stuff simply because i don’t want prospective students to rely on the JU brand name (which seems to be very weak outside West Bengal), without knowing the ground realities.

Three of my friends joined JU despite securing 4-digit AIRs in AIEEE and regretted it. They appeared for AIEEE again the following year and are currently studying in NIT Trichy(2 guys) and IIIT Hyderabad, after losing 1 year of study.

A senior of mine joined JU with ECE, but fortunately he had a backup – BITS Pilani (Goa Campus), where he is currently studying now with the same stream, without loss of year.

These examples show that political violence is driving away students.

    @agnivo
if u want the best for JU, please take some initiatives to stem the rise of politics.

    dark lord, agnivo, krish@b’lore:
Thanks a lot, all of you, for participating in a good discussion about Jadavpur University (JU).

The fact is that, this is one of premier and respected universities around the world. These rankings are for Engineering campus of JU not all branched including Art or Sciences. My personal feeling is the even if I consider Arts and Sciences, JU is far ahead of many Universities in India.

JU has better research in any field of engineering, better than IITs, Placements are excellent specially engineering. In Arts and Science you will find my top notch writers and policy makers with roots in JU.
Please refer to Ranking of Engineering Colleges/Institutes in India based on Research for JU position based on research. This was taken from Current Science journal.

I personally have high regards for JU as I was working at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, we had great research collaborations with JU.

I am busy with a product launch in company so was away from participation.

Well we do have peaceful protests and u really need to see it to believe it.About JU being past its prime, please give that crap somewhere else where people will blindly believe you rather than verifying themselves. If it were so then ABB would not have started scholarships last year and UGC would not have selected 10 odd students from each of the core departments for undergrad projects and they are being paid Rs 3000 pm.Now dont tell ABB and UGC are bunch of fools!

@dark lord:I sincerely hope your friends do well in life.I also hope you do well in life.Do you know when those pipeguns were manufactured?Back in 70’s.Now here we dont hold onto the past.We move on for a better future. You are really cutting a sorry figure here by bringing up the topic of JU brand name outside WB.Do you mind telling me where does the brand name come in hand.If its placements then you have got your answers.Due to recession past recruiters like SCHLUMBERGER,GENERAL ELECTRIC,FLUOR DANIEL have not visited the campus yet.But as I mentioned before there are plenty to show and I have already posted the name of some of the present recruiters. Now dont tell me these companies dont have brand value and thats the reason behind them selecting students from such a hopeless worthless place like JU!

My issue with your rankings (and most others in fact) is that Anna University’s Engineering Departments are split across 3 different constituents – College of Engineering, Madras Institute of Technology (where Dr. Abdul Kalam) studied and the AC Tech College. The institutions share faculty who regularly switch between all the campuses (especially between MIT and CEG), and share many common resources. There is less than half a mark’s difference that decides the kind of course that you can take at each campus. Still, it’s very sad to see that only CEG gets mentioned whenever there is a ranking anywhere.

I hope atleast you being a well educated PhD and not just some suit given some money to go speak to a few colleges (not saying that the suits don’t earn money) will rectify this in future rankings and atleast give your views for now.

Birijesh: Please have a look at the complete post to know the criteria for ranking. Please refer to Top Deemed Universities for 3rd or top rank for Thapar.
The simple thing is if you get an admission to the colleges mentioned about you will never see Thaper. Thapar is good college when you miss the colleges above.
Money dont play a role to get admission to those colleges where as with money you can knock the doors of Thaper, and where money can in education the standard goes down.

I was surprised to see the name of Indian Institute Of Technology,Bhubaneswar not in the list. It is the first and the largest new IIT and going by the ranks IIT Bhubaneswar gets almost the same JEE ranks as IIT Hyderabad.Bhubaneswar being the educational hub it is there would be ample oppurtunity for great campus placements.

Sourodeep: When I was making this list, IIT Bhubaneswar was not announced. I will be adding it to the coming list. Thank you so much for the advise.
