Top Engineering colleges in India – Ranking

2009 May 10
by Zahid

Engineering college rankings are my great interest, as I studied from a private college and ended up finishing my PhD in IIT. Since 2005 I see ranking by different agencies and magazines, which never presented it from a students’ perspective.

Most of the ranking are based on some assumption and after a listing they again release revised list modifying some ranks.

Here I present a list for top ranked Engineering schools in India based on Student quality and preference, Faculty, Infrastructure and Industry interface or placements. This Top Engineering Colleges in India 2009 ranking will definitely help students to decide their career paths. Also to help with engineering courses a good analysis of each engineering course with future scope is given at Best engineering courses.

A genuine effort to find is made to find Top Private Engineering Colleges in India and also tried Ranking of NITs in India to help students find right place for their career. The list of Top NITs in India is a good resource for M.Tech and AIEEE admissions.

If you have any question, suggestions or need more information, please don’t hesitate to drop a comment. I will get back with more information within a week time.

I kept new IITs up in the ranking even though they are quite new because of quality of students joining and IIT Hyderabad little up in ranking because a lot of students from Andhra Pradesh make into to IITs and they prefer IIT Hyderabad over less rank IITs.

For a detailed post on why new IITs are top ranked check this.

    Hello……
i m a btech 2 year student at a new iit at punjab (ropar).
all those students confused between new iit s and old nits or bits ,i tell them one important thing; the student quality at our clg is excellent and scores of students are there who have got 350+ score in bits but have dropped it including me! and i dont regret it.I dont say that bits is bad but the student quality is obviously better and who can this thing better than one who is already studying in these new iits!@!

and as far as faculty is concerned i request u to go to the following link:

this is only a small example to show u that the faculty is excellent.

i hope this will give answer to many queries of the student…
If still any doubt remains feel free to mail me at :

    HI there…….
I am a B.Tech 2 year student at a new iit at punjab (ropar).
This is for all those who are confused about getting admission in new iits or old nits or bits.

The first thing i assure u is that the student quality of the new iits is much better than that of bits or nits because we all have dumped these clges to get admissions at new iits.

Whereas the faculty is concerned ,besides all being phd graduates all i need to show you is the link below from Indian Express newspaper:

They quit there jobs abroad to teach at iit

If you still have any queries about anything pls feel free to mail me at

hi there….it is not factually correct to rate an institute even before a single batch has graduated. this is because you are rating the name” IIT” and not the institute . it may be better than bits and nits and it bhu , but the judgement should be reserved , moreover even the campuses are not completely ready ,the person who has done the survey should define parameters and stick to them and not rate only on basis of the brand.

    @ Rajarshi Som

dude wake up from your false notions,i am a Mechanical Engineering grad from JU and I know how better a college it is than NIT Durgapur. These allegations are outrageous and baseless. In the Engineering Faculty the student union is absolutely apolitical (yes) and there are no violent clashes. The teachers are always there to guide the students and are actively involved in research and consultancy.Listen up you liar, even in this recession hit market 82 companies recruited engineering undergraduate students and they include companies which dont set foot in your college.I dont have any grudge against NIT Durgapur but its very bad to see someone making false allegations. In terms of ranking you should be clubbed with BESU in the 30-40 range.Students from JU Mechanical get to work in General Electric for internship and go to Germany for projects.I dont want to say anymore but guys dont believe in these absurd comments regarding Jadavpur University.
