B.Tech Admission Advises

Petroleum Engineering: Prospects, Future and Institutes in India

Petroleum engineering degrees are not very popular in India because of fewer universities offering admissions to petroleum engineering and less awareness in parents. During the first year of study in petroleum engineering students usually learn about basic engineering methods and techniques and from second year very specialized courses in petroleum engineering are offered that include Reservoir Studies, Gas Hydrates, Environmental Impact of Petroleum Fluid Operation, Characterization of Crude oil, Development of Computer Software, Polymer Synthesis and Characterization, Profile Modification, Development of Novel Fracturing Fluid, Characterization and Separation of Oil-Water Emulsion.. etc.

In this course student will learn subsurface activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. The two key area of learning will be oil exploration and processing of crude oils. Oil refining and distribution are also thought in this course of engineering.

Petroleum engineering course offer wonderful job opportunities at global and domestic levels. Opportunities in oil and gas sector are ample in Middle East with very high annual income packages. Higher education opportunities are good all over America and Europe too.

Core Companies: The organizations in which the graduates are absorbed are Reliance Industries Ltd., ONGC, Schlumberger, Shell, OIL, Gas Authority of India Ltd., British Gas, Halliburton Services, Essar Oil, GSPC, Cairn Energy, IOCL, Essar Oil Ltd., Baker Hughes, Reliance Energy, NIKO Resources, GEOENPRO, MECOM Ltd., etc.

Average salaries: 4~5 lacks annual

Institute offering petroleum engineering:
ISM Dhanbad
Universities of Petroleum and Energy Studies
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology
Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University
Maharashtra Institute of Technology – Petroleum Engineering

    Sir,
I have completed my B.TECH in petroleum engineering.I would like to pursue masters in my relevant field.please let me know, what can I study to get a scope in this sector

    1. Priya Saxena

      • You can either opt for M.Tech or MBA for your pg degree according to your interest. Programs like M.Tech Petroleum Exploration, M.Tech Pipeline Engineering, MBA Energy Trading, MBA Oil & Gas Management suits to your field. For such Oil and Gas related programs UPES is best university to pursue. It has experienced faculty and infrastructure to support students to learn the basics of Oil and Gas industry. It has pretty good placements records for its Oil and Gas programs. Reputed companies visit every year here for campus selection and this is the thing which maters the most in the end. Choose wisely, work hard and there you go! Good luck!

  45. mannan

indeed.petroleum eng is one of d highest paid engineering fields n d demand is also very high, very very high i wud say(in foreign countries, duno abt india).. coz many people dont prefer goin into it coz of field work…it’s lyk for 6 months u r in d field, drilling offshores, underground…n 6 months at home..so there is no family life in it….but if u r looking for dollars$$$$$$ …………nothing lyk petrlm eng

    1. Nitin

      To All
To clear ur doubt i would say, that we too enjoy a great life rather i would say a adventurous one , yes we sometimes do get posted in offshore and other difficult locations but generally companies have on & off rotation system of working,
i would say to all that its not all abt money, its abt the ur passion and caliber to deliver mental as well as physical performance.
And dont even expect to earn easily in any industry or field in today’s time, so dun shy away from hard work
Good instititutes fr petroleum engineering in india are ISM obviously its the oldest,RGIPT-Rae bareli (offers B.Tech, M.Tech & PhD , both are govt institutes and filled by IIT-JEE also there is RGIPT -noida which offers MBA in energy management.
Good Private institutes for P.E are PDPU-gandhinagar UPES -dehradun, MIT- pune , i wouldn’t suggest any other institutes apart frm above mentioned .
Placement figures depends on Current oil&gas price ,your Academic performance, lastly Institute legacy nd exposure to industry
i think there are no or very few institutes for petrochemicals study but refining companies generally hire thru GATE and chemical engineers by campus

  46. DHANANJAYA

do you intrastate i oil field?

  47. Ranjeet Singh

    Friends,

I can again answer few of your questions:
    1. Petroleum is not going to finish (widely spread myth) in coming 50-100 years. So do not think that you will be useless after 20-30 years.

    2. Indian petroleum Industry is not very big compared to US and middle east etc. (we import 70% of hydrocarbon we consume). But it still a very good stream to go for. Also a petroleum graduate have scope to work around the globe.

    3. One can join petroleum industry not only as a petroleum engineer but also as a mechanical, Electrical, Chemical etc engineer and also with Master in Geology and Geophysics.

    4. Some good colleges are ISM Dhanbad, MIT Pune, UPES dehradoon, PDDU Gandhinagar.. etc (I dont know much about others so no comments)

    5. If you want to go for M.Tech in petroleum ISM can offer it.

    6. Its comparatively easier to get scholarship in reputed foreign universities for MS which provides a gateway for US/Canada.

    7. Salary is good if compared to other industries. But new colleges are pumping more engineers and hence cheap options for companies.

    8. In US and Europe industry is still recovering from recession so its advisable to gather proper information before going for MS at your own expenses.

    Cheers,
    Ranjeet

    A very informative article indeed!!!
To start a bright career in the field of petroleum engineering, its important that you have degree from a good university. There are various universities in India such as Pandit deendayal University,UPES dehradun etc that offer M.tech (Petroleum Engineering). One of my friend pursued the same degree at UPES dehradun and currently, he is working in a very renowned corporate. UPES surely has made its mark in the educational sector in a very short duration.

  75. Ranjeet Singh

    Dear All,
I guess I can help you with some of your queries.
Future: Future of this discipline is very bright. Energy driving the economy of any country making oil and gas a very important area of importance. Oil and gas will continue to be the major energy source for nest few hundred years, so never think that this is going to finish within few years.

    Institute:
    1. Indian school of Mines, Dhanbad: Its a college of IIT standard and undoubtedly the best institute for earth science (Petroleum, Mining, Geology etc..). To get admission, you need to clear IIT-JEE for this 4 year B.Tech and 5Year dual degree programme.
    2. Maharashtra Institute of Technology- Petroleum engg.

Other Private colleges listed in main article also provide course in Petroleum Engineering, most of them use AIEEE score for admission, and charges high fees like all other private colleges.

Apart from these institutions, some prominent colleges also provide Diploma and Master Degree in Petroleum or Petroleum related studies.

Career: Petroleum Engineers are the highest paid engineers in the world. Though salary is not of foreign standard in India, But this industry still pays more than other common engineering streams. Starting package may range between 2 lac to 40 lac per annum depending upon the college you graduated from and the company u joined.

you can reach me at : [email protected]

I am confused about my future studies in which field i should approach. I got to know about petroleum engg. but as the resources are coming to extinct, i just need help of some people who can give me beneficial sugession. Pls sort out my problem.

    1. Nitin

Mr. Aftab if u r looking forward to petroleum engineering as a undergraduate course then u should be careful , not becoz resources are extinct but becoz u have to study hard in petroleum engineering (The course itself if done frm a gud university is a rigorous one) to earn a job ” which only lucky nd hard working ones get in this type of speculative industry nowadays. After completion of course u will get a job which can be office or field work so u hve to be prepared to work for long hours at any location and weather condition thats why we are heavily paid.the job prospect is everywhere around the world where oil & gas is found so dun worry abt the resources.
