India Today and Times of India Ranking of Engineering Colleges 2010 SUCKS !!!

They did it again, but unfortunately times have changed a lot. I am following India Today’s ranking of engineering colleges since 2005, as I was a student at IIT Roorkee and was keen in knowing my college’s position.

As I remember, they visited College of Engineering Roorkee, a private engineering college in order to survey in the name of IIT Roorkee. That is how the survey used to be conducted and it looks like they have not changed ever since. To know more about these survey tactics from an IIT faculty please refer to ‘Survey Sins of the Times‘.

In this post I gave a detailed analysis of India Today’s ranking and ask engineering students across the nation to share it on facebook and orkut to show our strength and courage to say the right. Students are more aware and have better knowledge about institutes at least more than India Today’s journalists do 🙂

It’s not against freedom of speech. It’s about fight for right and correct information, and just not playing with students’ career. Let’s share it 1000 times on facebook and orkut. Encourage your friends to share with other friends too, let India know the real facts.

Analysis of India Today ranking and why they are senseless

First lets review ‘How the ranking is done‘ published on India Today site, May 22, 2010 last accessed on December 01, 2010 (download PDF). The first paragraph says:

“A team of The Nielsen Company partnered with India Today and conducted the first-ever survey to determine the top universities in India in humanities, science and commerce streams.”

There was no survey conducted by Nielsen Company for Engineering, Medicine, and Law colleges. India Today ranked all these colleges and proudly published it. I ask, on what data? No one knows. Maybe they used a lottery system to rank these colleges and unfortunately the final result went totally wrong. They published it as news or editorial which no one questions.

Ranking of Commerce and science streams
Based on some survey and on the opinion of few people, they call it factual data. Again a mistake, you cannot rank colleges in India on factual data because everything depends on few experts (which no one knows).

Let’s have a look at the ranking parameters as mentioned in the Step 1. The parameters on which the universities were evaluated are reputation of the university, quality of academic input, quality of faculty, research publications/reports/projects, infrastructure, placement opportunities and enrollment for higher education. None of these are actual values and definitely can be argued. I leave ranking Commerce and science streams here as we have a lot to talk about concerning Engineering rankings.

India’s Top Engineering Colleges India Today list an Analysis

Please have a look at the top 25 colleges mentioned in the below image. the Image was taken from India today’s Magazine, you can visit online version here.

India Today Engineering 2010 ranking sucks

Though IITs are kept on top, the order is totally absurd even when compared on the parameters given. IIT Bombay tops in everything since last few years. Please refer to ranking of IITs in 2010 read all the posts to know more about how ranking is done.

VIT Ranking issue
In the published version of Indian Today’s Engineering Colleges Ranking, VIT was 8th rank as shown in image (check VIT site for details) and after lots of bad comment (read comments in India Today post) they changed it to 10th on online versions.

Recently, Prof. Tandon Committee, formed by MHRD for evaluating the deemed universities in India, gave VIT ( score 25 and B Grade). Visit ranking of deemed universities in India for more details.

The grade ‘B’ Universities are asked to improve their facilities and infrastructure to maintain the status of deemed university. On the other hand, India’s so called leading Magazine says it’s better than IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad, which offer admission based on JEE, world toughest exam to crack, have better faculty, research and placement records are better than any private engineering university.

And rest of ranking looks like total GAMBLE and lottery. As we all know, Govt. colleges don’t care about it much because they know they get best student whatever these magazines write. They don’t need any advertisement to run their shops like private universities do. Magazines like India Today took it for full granted for several years, but I think now time has come to put an end to these baseless tactics.

Times of India and Data Quest Ranking Scam

There are no words for their ranking either. Times Of India published results of so called absurd survey results conducted by DATA Quest. Their rankings are as below, not even all IITs are their ranking and private colleges are better than IITs huhuuu. Please read enjoy and have fun time with worthless, shameless and un accountable use of leading media in India. Please visit official source TOI site here. Do not miss reading comments there 😀 (last accessed 20101204).

Rank Institute
1 IIT Bombay
2 IIT Kharagpur
3 International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad
4 Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, Delhi
5 Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani
6 IIT Delhi
7 Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information communication, Gandhinagar
8 International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Allahabad
9 IIT Guwahati
10 National Institute of Technology (NIT Suratkal), Karnataka

Only one sentence for all these magazines is YOU ALL SUCK AS YOUR WRITINGS.

We need an alternate method or medium to publish information surpassing these magazines and newspapers, specially related to education. It’s every student’s responsibility to promote and support of authentic information. I ask all of you either start a medium or support the people working towards correct information at least in education related fields.

With this I request all the readers to share it with all the friends and discourage the bad survey tactics by these magazines and journals to sell their hard copies to parents and students. And totally mislead them in making career decisions. Hope every time you share it friends on facebook it reach to many people looking for right information may guide next generation looking for right information. Lets make it 1000 shares on facebook.

If you have any new idea to make it circulate among other friends please drop a comment or mail me at [email protected]. Let’s make it possible to reach the nation, what student think about ranking and how we take it.

Let this reach every engineering student in India for the cause of right information and help the next generation.

Vit position is undeserved is true, but there r several criterions on which colleges r ranked its unfair if u just rate a college based on how difficult it is to get admission secondly have you seen the condition of many govt. Institutes (including some nits too) the infrastructure is very poor and not to mention more than half of the faculty in these colleges is on contract!! I had a chance to visit many campuses for ex in punjab I have visited thapar, nit kkr and nit jalandhar..and I would say that thapar is way better in every aspect including infra, student exposure, faculty, no of research projects, except for student quality but dat makes students
    good not the college..

  3. sana

    where z iisc…
yar ranking kha se pta chale private ke tab top iits b include nhi h..

  4. Shivi

I disagree with this critics as NAAC define only the infrastrucure and nothing else and there are many other stuff to rank a college or a university, VIT indeed has a very clean campus and very good infrastructure.

  5. adib

i think these all are money game.

  6. Anjan

These are just bullshits, stop these kind of rankings, just to get money, VIT is the most sucking institute, they don’t think abt the students, neither this so called India Today, shame on you people ..just to make money

  7. Purushottam

Out look magazine forget or not visited NIT Allahabad as name does not appear in list published in June 2011. How is it?

  8. vatsal sinha

it was very apalling to learn that in this years college rankings of top 75 colleges by THE OUTLOOK, only 6 IITs and 4 NITs have made it to the list… this very fact questions the crediblity of these rankings.

  9. pradeep

    in aieee 2100 sc rank

  10. pradeep

buddy please tell me i have 2100 sc rank in delhi state wii i be able to get admn in nit delhi

  11. Shirin

    Hi,

I agree whole heartedly with this article. A lot of students are mislead by these magazines. The truth about VIT is that students with very low marks pay exorbitant fees and study there. All becuase of the huge advertising spend they have with the magazine India Today and other media. They have also cashed in on the great brand name of Vellore Medical college, which has absolutely no connect with this engineering institute. VIT is definitely not a place where bright students looking for a serious engineering career should study. Students getting 75% and standing 80,000 in their entrace exams get the subject of their choice as long as they pay the higher fees that VIT demands. it is a nice place for parents who have money and are determined to make their not so bright children engineers.
Last year when my son and i ( now studying in a prestigiuos college) saw the ranking we almost took the decision to send him there . I am so glad we didnt make that decision finally. this year almost everyone who hasnt done well in entrance exams from all over India and abroad ( lots of NRI students) have been given admission in VIT.
Media definitely needs to have better ethics and there has to be a body that moderates this kind of Misinformation.
Till then only students of this country will continue to suffer becuase of poor controls and apathy of the gevernment.

    WAY TO GO!!!!THANKS FOR SHARING

  13. Bhawana Rajora

Huuuhhh!!! i am so confused after reading this…
What should i pursue then if the ranking of the colleges on net is fake…

  14. Aditya shukla

my jee rank (air) is 963, bits score is 360…

should i take up admission at bits-pilani or iit-roorkee?

which on is better for electronics & electrical engineering and related fields, in terms of recruitments ?

  15. Milind Sah

Hey u r comments are getting me even more confused. After all this discussions can anyone tell me where does BITS Goa stand?Plzzzzz…reply soon

  16. Akshay Jajoo

Thanks for publishing this!!!!this article will help some ghochu students and over concerned parents to come out of fraud nets woven by some private institutes together with irresponsible money minded media groups.

  17. Aveek

Why do you forget long ads about IIPM on Times of India. I saw it listed in UGC’s benami college list sometime back

  18. Aveek

Survey Sins of the Times cannot be read by users not added by author previously

  19. ank

this is totally nonsense……there is no place for private colleges(except bits pilani) to stand among iit’s and nit’s. They can never cross the reputation of iit’s and nit’s
nobody will go to VIT if he/she is getting adm in an iit or nit

  20. Inu Yasha

Unfortunately, India does not yet have a law which punish the media for misleading young fresh-out-of-school children with what is definitely “paid news”.
I would like to how much VIT and DAIICT pays for high rankings, when it is a known fact that VIT is pathetic and DAIICT is just about mediocre.

I think that the MHRD scores should be the only reliable source for appraising the quality of an institute. Even then, every prospective engineering student should conduct extensive research before deciding on what colleges/streams to choose.

  21. Ashwini

I want to get admission in govt. College.Bt there is a controversy among private&govt. College.plz clarify which of the better is?

  22. Sapta

A question to those who have claimed VIT is better than IITG, if your sons or daughters crack IITJEE and get an opprtunity to study in IITG, will you get your ward admitted to VIT, as VIT is better than IITG?

It was not expected from a nationally reputed magazine like India today……

    That is really horrible….
these stupid reports of media mislead a students carrier….
they should be very very careful while doing such these surveys.. but they can’t… thank you very much for such a useful information, sir…..

  29. kashyap

hey folks wher are you people?iits are not even among the top 1000 universities in the world.now iits and nits are like sinking ships.they are worser than ever before.its the colleges like bmsce bangalore, vit vellore etc are the top colleges in india

  30. sapna

NITs have much better reputation as engineering institutes and are INIs. BITS Goa has years to go before coming to the rank of established NITs. Dnt go by location or shiny campus and the BITS name. Ofcourse BITS Pilani is a very good engineering insti and the definitely the best private institute of India. But BITS Dubai/Goa doesn’t share that glory.

Its a pretty new campus and will need years(Maybe decades) of work before it will be recognised at par with IITs/NITs. Shiny campus dsnt mean a good place to study. (A.K.A VIT/SRM) E.g. It took BITS Pilani four decades for it to be today recognised as one of the best places to study in India. Think BITS Goa can replicate it in four years?

  31. Rajendra Kolli

This is the time to remind the media that they are not the eternal organisation who can control and dictate someone’s position in this field. There is no comparison between the IITs and a private institution in any aspect, let it be faculty, sports, student care, quality leave alone the culture of life at the campuses of VIT. People are not that ignorant but this seriously hampers the dreams of some of the brilliant students of this country and must be seriously condemned.

  32. Chinmaya

This is a mere procrastination of deep rooted corruption. As a student of IIT Bombay I must say we must stop this kind of rubbish media hypes. This is really a shameful incident.

  33. Subahjit

    Its absurd.
    Thanx for circulating this.
    The ranking system sucks.

  34. paramjeet saroj

now a days media can write any thing in their magazine but we have to careful. There is large different between private and govt. colleges. VIT & BITS is also one of reputated colleges but these comes under a privates once. IITs having reputation allover world . so we cannot say that IITs = VIT = BITs.

  35. mallik

dear media, i seen corruption in many areas but u being one the leading magazine i never expected, i am sorry to say that u destroying yourself by giving such a funny ranking. you dont know but any educated man recognize this funniness.

  36. Arko

    Its damn shocking!!!
I’m a student of IITG and I’ve friends reading in VIT as well….by their own admission VIT sucks!! The infrastructure at IITG is marvellous as are the faculty both of which VIT lack!!!

  37. akash

i totally agree that these rankings are bullshit….. dere r some colleges in the ranking whose names weren’t even heard of before these rankings were published.. and the very fact that the top IIT’s have been excluded makes these lists a work of fantasy .. no offenses , but i also wud lyk to request Mr. Niketh to consider wat he has said about BITS-Pilani.. i suggest him to get some authentic information abt the curriculum , the sports facilities , the placements , the R & D etc etc of BITS-Pilani before comparing it to other colleges… i m not saying dat BITS is the best but u cant keep BITS-Pilani and VIT at the same level.. neone who is related to engineering field knows dat BITS-Pilani is much much better than any other private engg. college in india ..

  38. A S Bidyarthy

India Today is becoming nervous day by day. It is no more good.
If a Cat will donate some money to this magazine and will say to publish the news that ” I have killed a Tiger ” India today will do this .

The name of this magazine should not be “India Today” , it should be donate today.
It is very shame that name of this magazine is starting with our Country name.

  39. satish

i think our media people are mentally disturb. i suggest them to go mental hospital first and then do work for public

  40. Vinay

    Bravo..!! India Today..
    .
    .
First of all IIT Guwahati never allows any such kind of Surveys to take place inside campus. Even media is not allowed inside the campus, except during Fest’s. Then how come these stupid people giving us their numbers based on what…??
    .
    .
As Niketh already mentioned some point, I would to give a brief overview….
Regarding placements, every year IITG is giving more than 90% placements….
TOP class infrastructure, visit it and you can even say best campus in India.
Best Sports facilities in All Other IITs.
The only thing IITG lacks is its location…..bcoz its in north east .. its less desirable by students, nothing else and this doesn’t mean that it lacks intellectual power…and i don’t think any ranking is based on location of college. India Today plz leave these colleges alone….we have not studied and cracked JEE to be classified by ur rankings..

  41. Sumit Das

What a rubbish article?…how can iitg left behind other private engg colleges?…they have nothing to prove it…india today should be banned from our campus. also it should be banned from publication fake news.

  42. himanshu poonia

    dnt get shocked !!!

    every thing sells….so INDIA TODAY….

Is not BITS above IIT Kanpur…it should be..as it is above IIT Guwahati..!!!

    f***k

  43. himanshu poonia

    dnt get shocked !!!

    every thing sells….so INDIA TODAY….

Is not VIT above IIT Kanpur…it should be..!!!

    f***k

  44. Sudeep Shukla

This is ridiculous.. I wonder who in India actually would believe VIT ranks better than IIT-Guwahati. Hehe.

  45. raunak singhi

next time survey showing mayawati becoming pm. Its faking news vs india today

  46. g r b prasad

This kind of false interpretations should be seriously discouraged?
On what basis they can compare a private institution with the Indian youngsters dream place IIT ………,so careless and misleading…..This proves the status of thinking and mentality of those who published……..at least ask them to be transparent while making public news….to make INDIA a better place….please

  47. anuj

is mtech starts in new IITs from 2011.plz reply

  48. Yogesh

Times of india ko maro goli(they r corrupt……),wo unki ranking kuchh bhi ho jaye change nhi karnewale, kuchh aisa hona chahiye jisase students aur unke parents ko ranking k bare me sahi info mil sake.

  49. Niketh Sabbineni

It’s a nice point that you guys are making. The College ranking by magazines is outrageous and totally misleading.
How can an IIT be compared to a college to VIT or BITS. It’s moronic to say the least.

Look at the infrastructure at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the placements at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the no. of phd’s at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the no. M.Tech’s/Msc at IITG versus BITS and VIT,
Look at the faculty qualification at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the curriculum at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the sports facilities at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the Humanities Department at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the Mou’s that IITG has versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the Distinguished speakers that come to IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the R and D at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the no. and quality of publications at IITG versus BITS and VIT.
Look at the qualifying exam to get into IITG versus BITS and VIT.

There must have been a really ignorant (and probably bribed) journalist to publish such falsified statistics.

    1. Zahid

Niketh: There is no comparison between any IIT and other University or private college. This is all media GAMES!!!
IITG is far far better in any aspect and beyond comparison to other private institutes ranked higher.

  50. shobhit

thnx for revealing this truth abt false ranking system
    we’ll definitely circulate it

  51. Kallol Dey

It is very sad to see that our news channels are also being corrupted and publishing misleading news without thinking about public interest.

  52. Satyadeep Karnati

    WTF! VIT is above IITG?????
media don’t think about the consequences of tailoring facts.
They just want to make more and more money.
VIT declares itself as the best private engg. college in the country.
Then where the hell is BITS-Pilani according to it??

  53. shoaib ahamed

thanks zahid bhai for giving good informaion, sre i will forward to my friends.

  54. shoaib ahamed

yes.I strongly believe that magazines and media also shows those colleges who gave money ..magazines demand colleges administration..so for student ..must prepared to know truth..Better options are , only contact college students, seniors…..

  55. m sandeep

can u tell me how’s i2it(international institute of information technology) i got in networking and telecommunications wether opt for it or not pls reply

  56. Kunal B.

    thats shocking news…..
How can be they so careless…???

    1. Zahid

Kunal: Its just their attitude. They are so careless and rude just because they think they sit on top and no one ask them and write whatever they want and sell many copies. Innocent parents and students wait for them to make Ranking and these magazines cheat their dreams.
