GATE 2014 Changes And The Take For Students

After the tender notice from IITKGP for GATE 2014 it became much clear what kind of changes we can expect from GATE 2014. Though the details can still be changed till last minute, but I mostly what I shared in video would stand for the year 2014. This is a part of GATE 2014 preparation Guide, do follow it for more updates.

The basic change is in 2014 whole GATE exam will be conducted online and there will no other changes in pattern and marks. The syllabus would also be same as GATE 2013 but still we need to wait and see.

For more details follow the vid.

Check out GATE 2013 changes vid for more ideas

I also think that GATE 2015 will see more changes and would adopt an international testing approach and algorithms can be designed and deployed. I am also looking for a yearlong GATE exam not just once a year, same as GRE.

If you are preparing for GATE 2014, sit tight and try hard, there are no ways to make it easy in coming days, specially for average students.

Do share this with friends and like InI on facebook, follow in G+, and subscribe for more updates on GATE 2014 and other related stuff.

Wish you all great luck ahead.

Numerical Answer Type Questions: The question paper for GATE 2014 will consist of questions of multiple-choice type and questions of numerical answer type. For multiple choice type questions, candidates have to choose the answer from the given choices. For numerical answer type questions, choices will not be given. Candidates have to enter a number as the answer using a virtual keypad.

Hi friends, I have a question about the availability of text books in ace engineering academy Hyderabad. I’m a B tech(civil engineering) completed student.I’m going for gate coaching this year.Do i have to take all my textbook there? Is there any library available?I believe that depending only on study material is not enough for gate preparation.I cannot come to my home to take text books before the course ends due to very long travelling distance between ace academy and my home.Any one who have knowledge about the academy plz answer..Any old student plz help…

    1. Gautam

No need for the books, they will provide all things sufficiently along with Question Set, no need to carry books.

      Yes, there is a library.

      Good Luck 🙂

    2. Rajiv alluru

yes you have to take text books there . Books will help you every time after lecture and to practice. No library available, have to live in a hostel and give time to study only 🙂

  20. Nayanika

My query regarding the changes in GATE exam conduction:
    1. If we have to enter the numerical answers then do we have to enter the exact answer? Since that will be slightly difficult to guess the exact numerical answer!
    2. Depending on the change that all exams will be conducted online what changes should I make in my preparation strategy? Since previous year my brother gave aieee online and due to server crash or something the students had to change their systems a no. of times. Finally he tells us that there were a no. of questions which he had attempted that were not counted.
If similar problem were to occur in my case then what will I do!!

    1. ISGA

      1. there is a range for numerical answers..
like if 1.85 is the answer, normally 1.7 to 1.95 will be considered as correct answer.
      2. sorry, I don’t know.

  21. sanchit

their wont be any changes in gate pattern 2014, these are all rumors…

  22. vikram

sir it is my sincere request you to please suggest me whether doing mtech from hyderabad colleges such as ou affliated and jntu affliated colleges is benificial to my career and also clarify that they fetch me good placements. Apart from these after completing mtech what are the JOB OPPURTUNITIES..

    1. sai

Dear Vikram, Based on my Experience i would rather ask you to join any private firm then opting for pvt engg colleges in hyd. they are not even fit for Btech then how one can expect ME or Mtech. even top colleges in Hyd which are good for BE/Btech is no no for Mtech.
As far as Placements , Many ME Freshers for OU/JNTU are still Searching for jobs.. u can guess the situation in Pvt Colleges 🙁 ….
This is particular for Mechanical Students.

  24. amrutha

sir, i want to know the systematic way to prepare gate in chemical engineering…

    1. Bikram

      Hi Amrutha,

First of all what was supposed to be taught on the next day, you have to read that part from the text book beforehand like reading a story book.
(Understand whatever you can, and take care of the remaining after it is taught in the class).
#1. read that topic from book before class.
#2. attend the class analyse what faculty said. clear any doubts in class.
#3. again read from books and clear all doubts and solve questions.
If you read 2008 JEE air 1 Nitin jain’s experience u will find the Same.

I have a request to Zahid sir, please take the Interviews ONLY for CORE (EE, CIVIL, MECHANICAL, Metallurgy etc ) students. Because for CS , EC there you will find lots of resources and interviews. But very few Quality interviews i have read to help core areas students. Please take only CORE students interview. How they prepare and what kind of questions ask in different IITs etc.

Also check different department sites, students home pages you will know more.

For Civil i have found few guidelines here http://www.gatecounsellor.com/interview_CE.php

Here is good advice from vikas garg (AIR-3, 2007 CS) he was IISc student and now phd student of UIUC

Here is a description of what I feel is important for getting an opportunity to study at the premier research institute of the country; students at large may benefit from it:

    1) Clear your basics and fundamental concepts. There is no point mugging up each and everything; need to develop the ability to think rationally.
    2) Do as much practice as possible. Specifically try to solve as many test papers as you can within the stipulated time, this will instill a sense of confidence in addition to improving speed.
    3) Don’t try to run through the paper. 3 hours is a long enough period and time won’t be a constraint should you know the things.
    4) Avoid making silly mistakes. It’s imperative that you get right most of the problems from topics that you are comfortable with.
    5) Keep solving GATE papers of last 10-15 years. Monitor your progress as you master more topics from different subjects.
    6) Believe in yourself and your abilities. If anyone else can do it, you can most certainly as well.

Another important point: Go through some standard textbooks without haphazardly chasing all the study material in this world!! I found the following books useful:

    1) Computer architecture: Henessey & patterson, Morris Mano, and William Stallings.
    2) Discrete mathematics: Kenneth Rozen, Kolman-Busby-Ross.
    3) Finite state automata/theory of computation: Michael Sipser, Peter Linz, and Hopcroft-Motwani-Ulmann.
    4) Compilers: Aho-Hopcroft-Ulmann (The Dragon book).
    5) Data Structures/Algorithms: Mark Allen Weiss (excellent), Tanenbaum, Cormen et. al (an absolute must), Kruse-Tondo-Leung, Sedgewick, Brassard. Horowitz-Sahani etc. for specific topics only.
    6) Operating Systems: Galvin-Silberschatz (standard book).
    7) Computer networks: Behrouz forouzan, Kurose.
    8) Mathematics: No specific book—> book for discrete mathematics covers most portion of maths also.
    9) DBMS: Korth-Sudarshan, Elmasri- Navathe.

    1. mohit

this books r sufficient to study for gate 2014..????

  32. Rohit

hmm.. still seems senseless to me .. may be of a little help to some ..just a little.. and so what if some body asks Q.s from out of bound subject ..i guess then you have a little liberty to commit a mistake.. they must be knowing that its out of syllabus and wanna see how you react to the situation..
Nobody can tell what Q.s or their types are coming up in interview. Its clear you can’t deny any kind of foretelling, with equal possibility of it being fake regarding to the paper as you are an aspirant. Well this may even mislead.
The attitude is very similar to any pre exam period when you can’t hold your self to view a mere guess paper.
Any ways good luck for your prep

    1. ANKUR JAIN

@rohit bhai from seeing all your previous comments, it’s clear that you are not at all interested in doing M.Tech.. so why are you even here.. please go and do something useful..

  33. BIKRAM

Ankur jain , read posts in this page about Interview experience

      Any for EC?

For ECE i have found another site

  34. Rohit

@Vishnu Check out the following link, if you are so hungry to know preparation strategy of others.
And yes .. what you are asking for, in your comment, gonna take a long long time and even longer to people to pick graceful matter out of the bulk and put it in their preparation and by the time GATE 2014,15,16, etc are over.
This is a human mind ..the tendency.. that it want every thing to become so much easy for it.
The present iitans had believed only on their potentials, they must be having faith in their will to do it.. so think please and don’t waste time in hoping that things will become easier just like that.

    http://sujithkumarb.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/a-gate-air-1s-preparation/

    1. ANKUR JAIN

@rohit bhai Vishnu’s idea focuses not only on preparation strategy. the main thing was the interview and admission procedure. Now you will not know Rohit.. but if you surprisingly get around AIR 400 in next year’s GATE, then you will be in a complete confusion whether you will get or not.. and once you get the call letter for interview, you will not have a clue on how to prepare.. you may think it will be the same as the gate syllabus, but it may not be.. last year in iitkgp they even asked questions on differential equations in cs interview which is not at all there in their syllabus..

      @vishnu very good idea bhai..
@zahid bhai if u do this then it will be easy for first time candidates like us

  35. Bashir Asdaque

    ThankYou sir….

  36. Rohit

I cracked GATE 2013 in my final year with 43.67 marks in EC & without any coaching, got 6442 rank ..general candidate.
    Still no use.
Thank God my aim is not to do M.tech.

  37. POORNIMA

That was a great great suggestion from your part, Vishnu! Truly a great idea to make InI a platform for all those who made it into IITs to help other aspirants. If it happens, that would be a breakthrough in the InI history!
May something very similar(or exactly the same) to your suggestion come true, Vishnu! 🙂
All the BEST Zahid Sir! 🙂

    1. Bashir Asdaque

      I agree with Vishnu Brother.

  38. VISHNU

Thank you very much Zahid bro..

I did skim through the tender notice, but completely missed the part about mock exam. May God bless you for your dedication!

And happy that the gate exam is still a one tier exam. Although it would be nice if it were more competitive – like two tier exam. But as I’m currently working, it’s less tensed this way.

Also, I’m very happy that it has gone online. I have slight dyslexia which made substantial impact upon my previous attempt. Now I don’t need to see the hard print anymore 🙂

I just got a little confused when you said that everyone won’t get the same set of questions. You have said that gate committee is looking for this change. But are they going to implement it in Gate 2014??

And one request bro. I’m sure everyone is very eager to know about the M.Tech admission procedure that happened at various IITs this year. It would be great if it were explained in a storyline manner. It would be even greater, if you ask various students who succeeded in getting admission in various IITs, to write their own story of how they got there. Starting from how they prepared, the difficulties they faced, how their 10th%, 12th% and college% influenced their admission (this is a main concern for most of the students), what their GATE mark, GATE score and category are, how they got direct admission, how they got through the interview, how the atmosphere was like during the interview, questions asked during the interview, how many IITs did they get selected, on what basis did they select their IIT, what they are planning to do while at IIT, what they are planning to do after IIT, etc (you can think of many more things), and anything which they would like to add.

I referred the source code of this site bro. It seems you are using WordPress for this site. There is a feature in wordpress like giving permissions for certain users for certain pages. So, you can create a login for those studying at IIT && those who wish to share their most interesting adventure of getting into their dream institute. After that create one page for each user and award them their ownership of their respective page. So from then on, they can update their details at their whim, and refine it over the years (i.e. they can even update it even after two years, about their adventure into their real world and how IIT helped them stand where they are).

Believe me bro, most of the GATE toppers would have been followers of InI. So, they have your trust and so they will easily accept your proposal for such a deed. This is your main advantage bro. An advantage which no other website/organization has.

This is just an idea to make InI truly world class and outstanding. Even though there are tons of website out there for GATE, the one thing that makes InI standout from the crowd is that it is written from the heart. It would be superb, if it were a joint collaboration of many more hearts. If this were to come true, in a few years, I’m sure that it would be every M.Tech IITians honor to make a place in InI.

I didn’t plan on writing this bro. But still, I’ve said everything that came to my mind while writing this post. If anything was wrong pls forgive me. God bless!!

    1. ANTONY

@ Zahid sir.. pls consider vishnu’s suggestion bro. It would be very very helpful if we get the ideas and techniques followed by cracked IIT gate students.

    2. VISHNU

Hi folks!! first of all thanks to @Bikram, @GateCse and others for sharing links to those m.tech interview experiences. Lets keep them coming! It contains a lot more data than needed. And I’m also very glad to see such a thriving community that we here in InI. It’s almost perfect!!

  41. POORNIMA

Yes, it is just that GATE 2014 is going online as predicted from GATE 2012/2013 exams. And, enormous changes could be expected soon. Better crack before the changes hit the GATE exam and escape as soon as possibke from the grips of the GATE committee 😀
